Extremely dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Rita continues to threaten the Greater Houston Metropolitan area. The forecast track has shifted slightly to the northeast, increasing the risk to Southwest Louisiana, and a significant portion of the oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Perry is urging all coastal residents between Beaumont and Corpus Christi to evacuate as soon as possible.

My response was really for others...I figgured you knew that.
There's nothing in the Atlantic at the moment that is remotely a threat to the US other than Rita.
Some people might die trying to prove a point or keep "a streak" intact.
Probably using gas jugs for water storage.
What did you decide to do for the storm?
Here's the historical track of all September storms passing within 300 miles of Rita. You can see that they rarely come into Texas.

Heads up Louisiana FReepers...
The MasonCam?
That's how folks can check on me. If the web cam is up and running, all is well here.
I got an email from a friend who evacuated Houston last night. She said they took all the backroads they could around the clogged highways, but it still took us 6 hours to get to the NW side of Houston and 10 hours to get to Austin. Does that explain it?
It would be a dumb move for me to try and get out of town right now.
I guess for the time being, I will enjoy watching the local news guys talk to the cantankerous old guys who have decided to stay in Galveston.
Don't GO EAST!!! They are changing directions of hurricane.
how much eastward did the track shift from 5am track to 11am track?
ContemptofCourt. Thank you for your concern but I know what I am doing. You have to understand where I live. I am not in the voluntary or mandatory evacuation area. I am NW of Houston in Cypress ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&location=lMAJSMlre4z8DgZNYHAc8CJtyiXxjY87ayW31%2fs3aIrTv%2btcbcLpH9O%2binVaPV2%2biLuzOWO3eWamgdV2Ux2sO7Zj266yhG%2fe
)
Channel 11 just said the track has changed and it is headed more for Beaumont. Praise the Lord!!
Crap, now Governor Blank-oh is going to be in charge over the worst part of the storm. More crying on the way.
Wow, that's quite a presentation!
Even though you may be on the "clean side" of the hurricane, there will be numerous tornados.
See how this thing tracks, and if the roads clear up. Then reconsider. In any case, be ready to go. If you stay, be prepared for about a week without water, power and sewer services. Can your kids take the 100 degree heat for a week?
In any case, you and your family are in my prayers.

I agree......... keep it in Texas where the adults can take charge.... Heads up Beaumont.
NHC track landfall has been shifted to High Island, TX
Thanks. Your expertise is greatly appreciated. ;o)
