Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

I'm really going to be watching it for this reason. At THIS point it looks like we'll be on the left side - but I suppose you never know huh?

I think I'm more worried about tornados - though there is something about the way the land lies around our house that storms generally seem to split around us.. I don't know why - but when we watch them coming on radar you can see them split and rejoin.. it doesn't seem to matter what direction they come from.. it's VERY weird.

We're preparing tho' ... stay safe!!!

She did. During some budget arguement. We lived in Nevada at that time and it was big joke about us being Texans. She is a big joke, actually.

See my post #651. I saw Dvorak estimates of 140 knots on the latest discussion (in other words, a Cat 5), which confirmed Janet's earlier post.

I was on the phone immediately to them for the third time today, spoke to my Teutonic-skulled father and said, Cat 5, GET OUT! The error margin is just too low - they were off by 15 miles with Katrina's eventual landfall this far out, and for them that's the difference between Cat 2 and the west eyewall at high Cat 3. And if it's off 50 miles, it goes right over them.

He's packing now. They'll make a final decision tomorrow, but at least they are getting ready now.

Hey guys regarding Austin:

I did just a quick and dirty distance from Corpus Christi to Austin and it's very close to the distance from Gulfport, MS to Jackson, MS. Now that would assume a path of Rita from CC toward Austin but it's going to be close to that according to latest models. Jackson was getting hurricane force winds for an hour and 1/2 out of Katrina, plan accordingly.

"she's the one that said we don't need weather satellites because we have the weather channel! LOL
Oh, she didn't. Please tell me she's not that empty."

She one time at a Nasa press conference for the Hublle asked if using the Hubble we could see the US flag we left there when we visited Mars.

I saw the troops moved to Camp Bullis on the news... prayers for him and all those that moved up there!

Camp Bullis is on the north/northwest edge of San Antonio - we're just north/northeast of there...

PER FOX as of now- there's a possibility this is already a Cat 5- about 140 knots...waiting for more data from NHC which is tough due to computer issues.

Funny you should say that, because we see the same thing around here. There must be some kind of high pressure effect. There will be an immense storm all around -- I'll see and hear the lightning & thunder, and I'll hear about the massive rainstorms and hail, but here it will just be overcast, maybe even sunny.

It can be very disappointing when we need the rain -- we just get teased.

Out of curiosity, I have an Internet friend that lives in Pasadena, I think the name of the street is Tripp or Tritt or something like that. Is that a particularly vulnerable area? I haven't been able to get in touch with her yet but I'm going to keep trying today.
