JOHN G. ROBERTS JR. should be confirmed as chief justice of the United States. He is overwhelmingly well-qualified, possesses an unusually keen legal mind and practices a collegiality of the type an effective chief justice must have. He shows every sign of commitment to restraint and impartiality. Nominees of comparable quality have, after rigorous hearings, been confirmed nearly unanimously. We hope Judge Roberts will similarly be approved by a large bipartisan vote.

By saying Roberts should be confirmed, the Washington Compost is trying to make conservatives think that he is really another Souter. To what end? The Republican senators are going to vote for him anyway.

John Roberts was a terrific pick. Bush made a great choice....the man is brilliant, goes to Mass every day......oh, right, THAT'S why the left hates him!! This would seem to be so. I'm praying for it to be so.

Do you really believe they are for Roberts?

To what end? The Republican senators are going to vote for him anyway. To what end? How about dissatisfaction in the R party and movement toward a potential spoiler third party with the end game being 2008 and you-know-who.

Once confirmed, any memories of confirmation battles will go pfffffft. There will be no effect vis the base, at least not until GW appoints the next nominee. And it better not be Gonzales.

The SC is very important. The SC is in terrible shape now. These SC nominations are very important. It's what we've all be working for. A case in point, the owner of this website says stick with the R party because judges are important and the R's will do right with their nominations.
It's what we've been keying on. Along with the WOT, it's the FreeRepublic payoff. It's the Conservative payoff.
A Souter-like nomination would hurt the R party, encourage a conservative third party and most like hand the White House over the Dem's in 2008.
That dog may very well hunt.

Am I the only one reading this editorial that thinks this completely "outs" the Washington Post as a liberal and Democratic newspaper?? They write as if they are a mouthpiece for the Democratic party.
Rather nice of them to admit it, don't you think?? I can't wait till the next nominee when they will be distributing the Dem's talking points.
