Paul Mcartney opened his US tour last night in Miami. I was there and I would heartily recommend it to my fellow Freepers, particularly those in my age range (I am 52). The show opened dubiously with a ten-minute video hagiography that should have embarrassed McCartney as much as it did the audience. Let's face it the man is obviously enamored with himself - playing with his dyed hair far more than a man should, waving to the crowd in phony humility after each song etc. etc. Having said all that I have to say that the show was SPECTACULAR! I was never a fan of post-Beatles McCartney but even those songs sounded great in the live setting. Beatlemaniacs will not be disappointed as the three-hour show includes mostly Beatles material and covers all the classics. Hey Jude, Yesterday, For No One, Got to Get You Into My Life, Get Back, Let It Be, Helter Skelter, I've Got a Feeling, Blackbird, Magical Mystery Tour, Eleanor Rigby, Back in the USSR, Maybe I'm Amazed, and many more. There were even super oldies like Please Please Me, Till There Was You and a thing they recorded when they were the Quarrymen. He moved effortlessly from piano, to bass, to guitar and played many songs solo. His band was first rate and very tight for the tour's first gig. By the end of the show I was willing to forgive him his narcissism (I guess 40 years of adulation changes a man), and was grateful for the opportunity to take my musician sons on such a wonderful trip to my musical past. The crowd was equally floored, demanding encore after encore, which he graciously gave. I felt compelled to write this review after reading the ridiculous review by Howard Cohen, which appeared in today's Miami Herald. Why should I be surprised ? The Herald lies about everything else too. I think he must have been having a bad drug trip or something as the show he reviewed bore absolutely no resemblance to the great show I saw that left a packed to the rafters arena of screaming fans on cloud nine. If the tour comes to your town, don't miss it.
Then maybe we could get a rest from The Beatles.
If you don't like them, don't listen to them, but to make light of the fact that John Lennon was assasinated and wishing his murderer would also have killed 2 more human beings (Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr) who've never hurt anyone makes you a pretty low class and deeply disturbed person. These 4 people brought a lot of happiness and terrific music into this world and for that you want to KILL them? Seek help you sicko.
Band on the Run was one of my favorite albums of the '70s. Paul had a lot of hit singles but his albums, as a whole, started to turn just a bit too schmaltzy for me. Most of his earlier solo work was pretty good though.
Evidently, he sings without stopping once to take a breath, which is so beautifully illustrated by thisreportabovewithoutparagraphbreaks.

Beyond that, reading in the past couple of days an interview with McCartney and a review of a Stones appearance, I realized that while these dudes may be doing it for the money, they are also intelligent and creative enough where they're doing it to explore various ideas and concepts, musical and otherwise, which makes for something interesting in and of itself.
You'll need a part time job to afford the tickets .
The Stones WERE NOT embarassing this year . Saw them at Giants stadium Thursday and the place rocked . Sold out and the audience consisted of babies to 70-over. They sound as they did in the 60's . You must have missed that decade .Hope I can move as well as they do when I'm in my 60's .

Name any Beatles song and odds are 60 to 70% McCartney wrote the melody. That's if the Beatle's wrote it. But of the four McCartney would be the last one I'd want to talk to. Too shallow and musically too brilliant.

Dead wrong ...McCartney the most talented ( wrote most of the melodies to Beatles songs ; is a multi-instrumenatlist inc. drums ; had the most successful solo career, and was the best singer in the group IMO ) . Followed by John ( 2nd best Beatles songwriter ; second best singer in the group ; multi-instumentalist , although I couldn't stand his solo stuff at all ) , then George ( writing Here Comes The Sun alone rates him higher than Ringo ) , and last Ringo ( he was somewhat creative , and highly influential/insprirational , but was a lousy singer although could hold a tune , and didn't write diddly ) .

Well , as far as the early British invasion groups go , yes , I'd agree with you . What he played always seemed to fit the songs , and he never overplayed . He did play some beats/fills that were never heard before . Loved that sloshy hi hat work , too .

Not necessary. My daughter is a Beatles freak. She has every song and album in every format. LP to CD. I took her to the UK when she grad. college and snapped her picture stepping across the Abby Road crosswalk, enlarged it and had it framed. We have a truce, I don't play Waylon Jennings too loud when she visits home and she doesn't play the Beatles ('cept stuff I like, she burned a CD) when I visit her. I have no idea where she acquired her taste for the Beatles. She was born after Lennon was shot and her mother and I are indifferent regarding any musical group, or any musical genre`. Go figure....;^)
Then you are a great dad. I have two sons, 16/14, and they are both Beatles fans. I am sure your daughter appreciates your truce...............

Great! I saw him in 2002 and will see him again in Detroit next month.
