Right now I am wondering if Reinquist passing while still a sitting SC justice might give the other older justices (Breyer, White, Ginsberg) pause to reflect and consider retirement.

I think John Paul Stevens (born in 1920) is the oldest. Ginsburg (born in 1933) is getting up there too. Time for both to retire.
Two appointments would be quite routine, historically. Clinton had two, Reagan had three (O'Connor, Scalia, and Kennedy) . . .GHWB had two, Carter had none (like W in his first term). If the average tenure of a SCOTUS justice were 18 years one vancancy would open up on average every two years.
I don't think this is correct. Nixon had three. Reagan had at least two.
