Some of the Red Cross charity debit cards, issued to Hurricane Katrina victims to buy essentials in their time of need, have been used to buy designer handbags.
A spokesman for the Louis Vuitton shop in Atlanta, Georgia, has revealed that some customers have used the cards, which carry a value up to £1,000, to buy coveted fashion items.
"We have seen three cards," he said. "There's nothing legally that prevents us from accepting them. Morally, it's wrong."
"And please let me know what debit card purchases conservatives find acceptable."
I would say food, medicine, affordable clothing, or housing.
Still looting, now it's the hard working tax payer footing the bill.
It speaks more to lack of character than to need, when charity is abused.
If you can't distinguish between gratefully accepting charity because it is needed for survival, and greedily abusing the generosity of others who may have truly sacrified in order to give, then a person could probably type until their fingers were bruised and bloody and you still wouldn't understand.

According to figures I have seen, the federal government is giving about $500,000 per peson affected. Not to mention private donations.
WHile a previous poster said they should be able to spend the money on whatever, I think we should hold off giving finances until they get settled. Given them the required items for surviving then let them establish their own earnings. By the way, I heard on Rush the other day that many people did not leave because they were waiting for their welfare checks.
At least they had the sense to live somewhere warm so that we don't have to provide welfare heating oil as well.
No doubt there are many examples of the one you related to be found across the country. It makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to think of honest, decent, folks who have worked their entire lives, and are denied assistance in their times of genuine need. And, to see hard earned tax dollars frittered away by the ungrateful, and able-bodied, who work as hard to abuse the system as others do to feed their families and pay their taxes.

I'd have local TV stations down at the mall in Houston waiting for these folks to come in and spend at Guicci or Chanel.

Being a manly man I really can't pull off the brocade jacket. But my new goal in life is to make sure that Blank-o is forcibly removed from office. Would that be an acceptable use of the money?
I read that truck loads of designer clothes had been confiscated, for some reason that I don't recall, and distributed to hurricane victims. Perhaps some of those recipients thought they might as well complement their largesse by completing the look using their debit cards!
Don't know if TV cameras would shame or deter potential abusers from that type of purchases, but it would surely help us to know who they are, and how they are spending our money! ha.

I would say NONE. The whole concept is flawed. Might as well pass out the dollars and skip the cost of printing and distribution of the debit cards. There is no way to assess need on a general basis. Make access to food, shelter, and medical available to all and deal separately, on an individual basis, with other needs. I wonder if the people already on the govt dole are also getting the bonus debit cards?

It's been my experience that folks who are intelligent, motivated, and disciplined enough to have managed to become persons "of means", won't be "making do" with second hand clothes (even the designer ones that I mentioned in another post), or furniture, for very long unless it's by choice. :)
Praying that you and yours are well, and that you will be able to return to the lives to which you have become accustomed very soon.
