Some of the Red Cross charity debit cards, issued to Hurricane Katrina victims to buy essentials in their time of need, have been used to buy designer handbags.

A spokesman for the Louis Vuitton shop in Atlanta, Georgia, has revealed that some customers have used the cards, which carry a value up to £1,000, to buy coveted fashion items.

"We have seen three cards," he said. "There's nothing legally that prevents us from accepting them. Morally, it's wrong."

I could see spending less than $75 but not what they are charging. A fool and their money are soon parted.

This is disgusting, and I'm sure outside of Fox News or Drudge there will be no mention of this.

But what about all of the Wal Mart stores that in NOLA that 'had' to be looted for the chil'rens sake?

I guess Louis Vuitton isn't carried at Target.

Oh no they looted Saks Fifth Avenue and all those expensive shops in NOLA. They needed the matching purse I guess to go with the shoes they stole.

Im sure there will be more stories like this, all an enterprising reporter has to do is call a business and ask a clerk if they have recieved a Chase Manhattan Katrina Debit Card.

There is a Guicci boutique in the Houston mall not far from the Superdome.

"Very possible that these cards were being used by opportunistic disaster "volunteers.""

I have a Red Cross $$ inside contact, i'll check with them and see if any thefts have been reported.

This is a Red Cross problem, IMO. Just make the cards usable for gas, food, house repair and lodging only.

"3 hurricanes"

Us also (Orlando) - we didn't get a nickle from the government - but then we didn't expect it either.

(Winter Springs, Oviedo area here) Sometime during November a FEMA man stopped by and left his card saying I could apply for reimbursement coverage. I thought about it, I felt too guilty to accept. But I can tell a $2,000.00 debit card would have come in handy to get that oak tree off my house after Charlie! Geez!

" Can I use the $2000 as a way of replacing my leather couches?"

Your insurance should pay for that, not me.

I'm amazed that anyone who could afford it would spend so much money on items that I wouldn't pay $2 to own.

But, there just aren't adequate words to express my disgust for those who would abuse the charity of their fellow man in that cold-hearted, greedy and ungrateful manner, and especially when I think of the examples of true sacrifice that are among those that make up the donations given on behalf of victims of Hurricane Katrina.

No one can be surprised by this. Same thing happens with food stamps. Ever been behind some one in line at the grocery store and see what they buy with stamps?

The government had to know this when they authorized distribution of these cards. Only reason I can think of is the mantra that a rising tide lifts all boats. The money going straight back into the local economy.

Just my TCW.

Do people really pay good money for these things?

To me they are ugly.

Tell that to George W. Bush.

And please let me know what debit card purchases conservatives find acceptable.
