I wish they wouldn't sully the memory of George Washington with Abe Lincoln. Why don't they combine Lincoln with MLK day instead?
There's a littl more to it than that. The state of West Virginia was formed during the War Between the States. This is a state where brother truely fought against brother. The first land battle of the War was fought here. The blue - gray animosity goes much deeper than Dem - Rep.

It's already "President's Day" here in Illinois -- the Land of Lincoln.
The irony here is that West Virginia is still officially listed as a southern state.
If there had not been a Lincoln there would not be a West Virginia. That is like Texas forgetting about Sam Houston.

West Virginia has the highest average elevation of any state east of the Mississippi River, and the most irregular boundary of any state.

For years Lee-Jackson Day was celebrated the third Monday in Virginia. When MLK, Jr. Day was created as a federal holiday, Virginia spent about a decade celebrating Lee-Jackson-King Day.
Governor Jim Gilmore introduced legislation to change that. Now, Lee-Jackson Day is a state holiday, celebrated on Friday. MLK, Jr. is a federal holiday celebrated on Monday, giving state workers a four day weekend.
An interesting tidbit I heard on the History CHannel the other day: West Virginia seperated from Virginia because the people there were anti-slavery.
Why not eliminate them all?
The founders of the state came close to naming the state "Lincoln."
They did that here in Ca. Now it is back to two separate holidays after years of being together.
