New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes
Ny Times ^ | September 8 | ALEX BERENSON and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

Posted on 09/08/2005 3:40:23 PM PDT by RDTF

Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.

No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.

Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.

The city's slow recovery is continuing on other fronts as well, local officials said at a press conference late this morning. Pumping stations are now operating across much of the city, and many taps and fire hydrants have water pressure. Also, tests have shown no evidence of cholera or other dangerous diseases in flooded areas, though health officials have said the waters contain levels of E. coli bacteria and lead 10 times higher than what is considered safe.

Efforts to recover corpses have also started, although only a handful of bodies have been recovered so far.

I hope everyone has contacted their senators and congressmen to complain about the use of federal Law enforcement in this illegal gun grab.

I have - I also called NRA.

Can you direct me to the part of the US Constitution that allows the government to suspend the 2nd Amendment? I've searched through my copy and must have overlooked it.

BTW, thanks for the ping.

I guess my point kind of dovetailes with what you were saying...exchange of services. It seems to me that spending 2-3K to protect your home from thugs was a worthwhile investment..especially when the government is coming in with the money guns a blazin'

Here's a paragraph taken from a news story I just read on AOL.

"Police fearing deadly confrontations with jittery residents enforced a new order that bars homeowners from owning guns. That order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of M-16-toting private security guards hired to protect businesses and wealthy property owners."

The locals are proving that they are no more competent than they were 2 weeks ago.

My understanding is that this order is not a ban for ownership in their homes...just a ban for carrying on the streets.

Will wait for more info to verify one way or the other.

And as mentioned by other posters *are they working off some sort of database, and *who is making the call to take legally owned weapons?

I think that BATFE has been dialed into the computers and POS (Point-Of-Sale) terminals of FFLs for a good while now.

Everyone toted concealed, hence derringers and other very cocealable types of firearms.

Do you mean the Kahr MK9 or the Serbu BFG-50?

Obviously in a time when the civil authority is unable to protect us, we need the ability to let the military do so. it ourselves.

declaration of marshal law?

It's what happens when demonrats are in control.Ya think I'm kidding? Let's evaluate...

LA has empty noggin and bling blingo in charge, surrounded by chaos. Nest door to them is Mississippi.Consider that Halley Barbour and Amy Tuck are in charge there, and they act like it. Witness the difference of Republicans in, vs demonrats. Remember this and think about the demonrats vision of the future. Now that you are fearful, buy as many weapons as possible and make ready for a day we hope never gets here, but be capable of delivering the goods if necessary.

Been tested from a prone position, although Serbu's actually got video of somebody firing one from a kneeling position.

Not me, bud.

Kicks less than a .270 when prone, the report is amazing- you can hear it echo in the distance, and the clouds of dust that are kicked off by the streams of gas coming from the muzzle brake are pretty amazing, too.

I wonder if they will be relocating these forced evacuees on cattle cars?

The third amendment says:
No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

But it doesn't say anything anywhere about the government not forcing us to house them. Look out.

Have to tell you, b. I NEVER have had much faith in government and believe we must be always vigilant. However, effective disaster management should be one of their basic jobs.

All this reminds me of George Orwell's "Animal Farm" where at the end the rules was replaced with "All animals are equal but some more so than others".

Interesting enough the slang for cops is pigs and it was the pigs who ruled over all in the book.
