New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes
Ny Times ^ | September 8 | ALEX BERENSON and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

Posted on 09/08/2005 3:40:23 PM PDT by RDTF

Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.

No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.

Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.

The city's slow recovery is continuing on other fronts as well, local officials said at a press conference late this morning. Pumping stations are now operating across much of the city, and many taps and fire hydrants have water pressure. Also, tests have shown no evidence of cholera or other dangerous diseases in flooded areas, though health officials have said the waters contain levels of E. coli bacteria and lead 10 times higher than what is considered safe.

Efforts to recover corpses have also started, although only a handful of bodies have been recovered so far.

I don't know Karl. Every day that passes, this event seems to take weird twists and turns. Had a friend tell me they were intentionally distributing the people all over the entire country just to disperse them, or fragment them just to keep the noise down. I'll be dead and damned before I'd let someone forcibly move me out of my state. Not today, not ever.

And as far as confiscating law abiding citizens arms, well that is just plain wrong, under ANY conditions. If I said what I really feel, this would be my last post.

I am beginning to wonder....the Wall Street Journal reported that the top 40 leaders in New Orleans and Mayor Nagin have a meeting in Dallas Friday to talk about rebuilding the city....and they intend to reduce the population 150,000 people.

Of course, that means the lower class areas are getting bulldozed. None of the rich people are getting the boot...they have Israeli mercenaries and private helos dropping off supplies daily.

"People keep saying this like it is a trigger and a requirement to turn over your guns. Not sure why we would *ever* have to turn over our weapons."

Most thought-provoking comment of the day. Somebody gets it. Thanks!

Give them the shot and some food and water and soap, if they don't have it already, and let them stay as long as they like. It's their house, or at least it used to be. Isn't that cheaper then putting up somewhere else? But hell no. Take their guns and kick their asses out. It just doesn't make any sense.

Maybe they will have to leave eventually if it really is dangerous. But why, after leaving them unprotected and without food and water for a week, are they so worried now? What's the sudden rush?

Starve them out, take their guns, forcibly haul them away? It doesn't sound like America.

authorities have been criticized for doing nothing so now they are making up for it by doing the wrong things..

NOW I bet they invoke the insurrection law, when people are exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights.

... began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms ...

Another reason to oppose mandatory registration.

"hired by wealthy citizens" - At $15 or $20 an hour any family with insurance and savings could afford to hire a gaurd to protect their property.

Time for everyone to hire their neighbor to guard their house, imo.

Payment? Exchange of services.

I wonder if they are getting receipts for the return of the weapons. Mine are not expensive top end firearms – but they represent a good chunk of money to me. There is also the little thing about self defense …

Sure seems like a fine opportuity for certain racist politicians to eliminate surviving antebellum architecture from the city. Not to mention loot houses full of antiques.... Reparations and all that....

Are those not some of the "upscale" houses on higher ground?

From the Carl Dregas story and can't be said enough!

>>> What I do know is that this is why the tyrants are moving so quickly to take away our guns. Because they know in their hearts that if they continue the way they've been going, boxing Americans into smaller and smaller corners, leaving us no freedom to decide how to raise and school and discipline our kids, no freedom to purchase (or do without) the medical care we want on the open market, no freedom to withdraw $2,500 from our own bank accounts (let alone move it out of the country) without federal permission, no freedom even to arrange the dirt and trees on our own property to please ourselves ... if they keep going down this road, there are going to be a lot more Carl Dregas, <<<

"One guy said, "they were mad because our guns were bigger than their guns."

TXBubba, I saw that same news report. The locked doors of the unscathed Mansions were being kicked in and the police were going through the rooms with their automatic weapons drawn! The homes that were untouched are now wide open to the elements and robbers. Just sickening. Note to self...get those locking steel shutters that lock-down home like a fortress....and have locking underground gun safe. There is no reason for these homeowners to be made to leave their properties or their firearms.
