Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.
No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.
But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.
Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.
The city's slow recovery is continuing on other fronts as well, local officials said at a press conference late this morning. Pumping stations are now operating across much of the city, and many taps and fire hydrants have water pressure. Also, tests have shown no evidence of cholera or other dangerous diseases in flooded areas, though health officials have said the waters contain levels of E. coli bacteria and lead 10 times higher than what is considered safe.
Efforts to recover corpses have also started, although only a handful of bodies have been recovered so far.

"If they are still in NO then they are law breaker"
In America, one is considered innocent until proven guilty. Just having Mike darancette arbitrarily declare them to be criminals is not enough to take away their 2nd Amendment rights.
But of course you knew that...
Ed
Goodness. It sounds like they are getting close to also ignoring the 3rd Amendment:
Article [III.]
No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
If they are using churches for command posts, I would be unsurprised to hear that they are also using private homes to quarter soldiers.
Amen! And it amazes me to find some people here, that actually believe the non-elite don't have a right to defend themselves and their property.
So where do you think "Republicans" will think of this?
It'll be interesting to see how THAT plays out.
Just saw an agent, do know what agency but he just SLAMMED a an old womnan against the wall and arrested her. She was refusing to leave her home and without provocation he attacked while Fox filmed it.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!
My God...this reminds me of the Warsaw Ghetto.
Ed
What law are they breaking? Please cite the applicable portion of the U.S. or Louisiana code.
Nothing. The Republican Party, judging from the last few years, is not of a mind to enhance liberty or get Big Stupid Government to back off.
Yet they laughably think normal people will support them.
Yes, and a rehearsal, a trial run. They want to see how it goes over with the sheeple.
I think we may be seeing the beginning of exactly that. The article states that the disarming is being done in advance of a mass forced evacuation. I think once the evac is complete we may hear that the remaing structures had to be destroyed for structural damage or "contamination". NO could become one big Kelo case. Condemn it all, pay off the landowners with federal money and divide it up among the politically connected "developers" who'll reap the lion's share of the redevelopment money (and share with their politician friends that made it all happen).
Yeah, so where is the ACLU with their lawyers to defend this woman's (and everyone else's)constitutional rights? Especially the Second Amendment right.
Don't hold your breath
So no one gets me wrong, I am 100 percent pro-law enforcement.
However, you do not, especially in situations like this, treat the good, law abiding like crap, nor do you attempt to take the firearms from those that are NOT breaking the law. PERIOD.
In the LA 92 riots, the cops left, and a hell of a lot of people grabed their arms, including thousands of Koreans.
Trust me, NO ONE even thought of taking their arms! Matter of fact, many cops were glad they busted out the weapons.
Sadly this has proven to be true. :(
I would take this report with a major grain of salt. Firstly, the NYT as we know are themselves gun grabbers, so it is in their interest for us readers to believe that the NOLA folks are grabbing all guns (and that, of course, the klymers fully approve and want to see it done everywhere!). I'd like to see the actual plan - it may be far more limited than this article makes it appear. Need to hear from someone on or near the scene on this one. Anyone out there close enough to this to provide the real scoop?
" Once everything is in place the Beast will rise out of the fathomless Pit and take the reigns of power and rule over the entire Earth."
But Hilliary lives in Chapaqua!

Look where our leaders have led us since '92. Pretty far left. What a mess.
