New Orleans Losing Both Teams? Is Louisville Approving a Downtown NBA Arena - $350 Million (Vanity)
WHAS 840 ^ | September 6, 2005 | Vanity

WHAS 840 (Louisvillle, Kentucky) is reporting city officials are closing in on funding proposals for a new downtown arena. There is still some debate as to the funding structure, but it appears to be moving forward in a positive manner. Yes, there are unofficial tenants interested in moving into the arena.

Flashback a few years ago, Louisville was the preferred location for the Hornets as they sought to leave Charlotte in search of a new home. At the time, Louisville decided against building a new arena allowing New Orleans to receive the Hornets into their city.

Ironic how things are turning out ...

This point doesn't relate specifically to NO or Louisville, but I don't think government should be paying for stadiums. The feds ought to pass a law against that.

Well, at least they've still got the Zephyrs.

New Orleans should build a new multiplex for football and basketball. They can call it the Aquadome.

The Hornets ... come on! They've only blackmailed two other cities in the last 6 years? ;)

No NBA fan I, but I thought it would be nice if Utah had traded their nickname back to New Orleans...Utah is the Beehive State, so they could have the Hornets...or the Hornetzz if they preferred, while NO could have the Jazz back....alas...

Last night I could swear I heard someone on the news say the Superdome was "coming down"? I wasn't listening carefully, so I could be wrong.

Anyone hear anything about this? I can imagine the insides are trashed, but I can't believe the structure is badly damaged. Maybe it's one of those "a tragedy happened here, so tear it down" or "leave it as a memorial and don't play games in it".

Yes, a structural engineer (or engineers) toured the SuperDome today and concluded that the damage is worse than first thought. He said in all likelyhood they would have to tear it down and start over. The N.O. Saints, knowing that it'll be awhile until they play in N.O. again, and that a sizeable portion of their fan base has left (or will be rather destitute and concentrating on other things when they do return) is seriously thinking of getting out. San Antonio and Los Angeles are said to be high on the list of possible new homes for the Saints.

So it's a safe bet that the Sugar Bowl will be relocated as well? Early on I had heard they hoped to play...maybe expecting the Superdome to be ready by January 1 was optimistic...although at that point there was no reason to cancel or relocate the game just yet...
