Mayor Nagin: Gov. Blanco Delayed Rescue

Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 11:38 p.m. EDT Mayor Nagin: Gov. Blanco Delayed Rescue

After days of blaming the federal officials for not responding quickly enough to the Hurricane Katrina crisis, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin praised President Bush on Monday - and charged that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco had delayed federal rescue efforts by 24-hours.

"I'm so happy that the president came down here," Nagin said of Bush's Friday visit to Louisiana in an interview with CNN. "He came down and saw it, and he put a general on the field. His name is General Honore. And when he hit the field, we started to see action."

But Nagin had harsh words for his state's leaders, telling CNN: "What the state was doing, I don't frigging know. But I tell you, I am pissed. It wasn't adequate." The New Orleans Democrat said he urged Bush to meet privately with Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco during the visit. The meeting took place aboard Air Force One, he said.

After reviewing the crisis with Gov. Blanco, Bush summoned Nagin for a private chat - where, according to Nagin, Bush explained: "Mr. Mayor, I offered two options to the governor. I said . . . I was ready to move today. The governor said she needed 24 hours to make a decision."

Reacting to the governor's footdragging, Nagin lamented: "It would have been great if we could of left Air Force One, walked outside, and told the world that we had this all worked out."

"It didn't happen, and more people died."

Local disasters are to be coordinated and managed from the bottom up. (Britt Hume today on FoxNews)

They could have READ and then FOLLOWED their plan.

I just watched Fox New with Brit Hume and Jindal was interviewed during one segment. Jindal was a whiny beetch. He could have been mistaken for Blanco in a polo shirt. The guy was blaming FEMA, the feds and anyone else other than local officials. I wouldn't support that guy for dog catcher. I was so disappointed because he was billed to be a politican with a great future. Instead, he looked like a 15 year old, whiny pusser.

You know what I've been thinking a lot these last couple days? What's going to happen when the dust settles and the panic is over and Nagin and Blanco start really thinking this through, not just reacting, and realize that the death of thousands of lives are their fault. It's going to be pretty heavy for them. Right now, I believe they're are just out in the "waters of disaster and panic" flailing around like a drowing person. Bush, on the hand, and his great General, are going forward with purpose, doing what needs to be done. It's like seeing parents among children -- or better yet, teenagers, who were supposed to take care of things while the folks were gone, and were negligent.

LOL!! I agree with you. I don't think it's a conspiracy, just a dereliction of duty.

And, p.s. I think this is what the Dems really hate about Bush.

He is like a very efficient C.E.O. He has goals, he has plan, he follows the plan, he gets things done. He's not influenced one way or the other by praise or criticism. Hey! He's a real leader, and they hate him for it.

Hey, I was watching Britt Hume tonight with Charles K., Fred Barnes, et. al. They showed the picture of the buses and Fred was angry because he was asking why hadn't those buses been used, etc.

Yeah, I heard what Jesse Jackson said, about not taking them too far from home - like they're dogs or something, that wouldn't know what to do if they were too far away from the ghettos of NO.

"Learned Helplessness" has not helped these people one iota!

You're right, he's had time to think -- and remember (The Evacuation Plan!).

Could be she is just a puppet. Maybe she is simply doing what her friends tell her.

It's pitiful how little most people really know about the way our country is set up and how the states are supposed to work in a time of a local crisis.

Did you hear Rudy Guliani criticizing Bush for not getting there sooner. No way, he took charge and executed his plan.

What a difference!

I feel the same way, but there's one thing that keeps coming to mind: "Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer."

........So did your wise city council vote to send help now, ----or in the morning?

We definately do not have a wise city council, today evidenced by a special meeting they called to introduce us to their choices for a new city manager.

At Wednesday's regular meeting we introduce two of the council members to notice of recall.

I'm smelling a rat. Gov.Bianco is clueless, gets her ass in a sling, finally knows she has killed 10,000 plus citizens, knows she has was offered help more than 72 hours prior to the storm coming on shore, finally gives Bush the green light,Bush starts cleaning up her fu.,NOW COMES MR. WITT,....WITT,,,,WITT,...Why Witt,... who on this earth would be recommending Witt and who would be giving Witt his marching orders like she did since 1982.

Did Hillary insinuate herself into this to control her own future (get me the phone records of all calls between Hillary and Bianco)

Dean and Hillary are on the outs. Would Dean recommend Witt or would Hillary recommend Witt? Dean doesn't know who Witt is.

Damn, Hillary set up Bianco. Keep your friend close...Keep your enemies closer.

I'm just spitballing here. I am not saying it is in stone.

Couldn't have happened this way.
