Superdome to be torn down?
ABC News ^ | 9/5/2005 | Ted Koppel

Posted on 09/05/2005 8:00:10 PM PDT by KarlInOhio

Just heard this on a promo for Nightline during the FSU vs. Miami game at about 10:12 EDT.

Ted Koppel: "The mayor of New Orleans, and it may be a wild exageration, but he said there could be 10,000 dead. And the Superdome, where you broadcast so many of your Monday Night Football games, that, I'm told, is coming down."

Considering you can probably count the number of MNF games at the Superdome on 1 hand... I would take this with a grain of salt.

Yeah, Kill the building because it is to blame for the Mayor's incompetence

Reminds me of the bone-headed idea that someone on our side had to tear down Abu Ghraib prison because some of the terrorists in there were made to wear panties on their head.

A spokesman for the Iraqi government then came forward and said, it will not be torn down, what a stupid suggestion.

If they tear the town down, where do you dump a city?

Right where it is just like every other city in History.

I take the opposite view. This storm and devestation may have actually kept the Saints in Louisiana. Yes, they were considering leaving before Katrina, but now leaving the state would give the NFL a black eye. The public won't care about the Saint's past financial woes.

I could be wrong about this. But I believe the NFL is very publicity conscious.

If the Saints do leave, they should go to Los Angeles. That's where the NFL wants to be right now - badly.

I'm with you. The 10,000 figure sounds about right in allowing the Dems and the MSM to bash the President, and blame him for all of the deaths. Later, when the real tally is under 1,000, the MSM will be silent. How disgraceful.

My bet, based on what I've seen on TV, the radio reports, etc... is less than 1,000 dead in NOLA.

I got a screen of Nagin's Sim City game. No wonder he want a cheat code.

That was in extremely bad taste - so I saved it and sent the link to friends. :-)

"The mayor of New Orleans, and it may be a wild exageration, but he said there could be 10,000 dead...right, and estimates are that if the mayor had used all those buses which sat floor deep in water throughout the storm and aftermath for evacuation, twenty thousand could have been removed from the city for every round trip the group made - but Koppel won't mention that......

It reminds me of the houses down the street that were rental property for welfare folks. After they left, some neighbors and I would go in and have a look around. It was unbelievable. The filth, cockraches, rotting food, the stench.. One neighbor actually came running out of one house and puked, it was so bad. I can only imagine what the Superdome looked and smelled like.

I have two words - Pruitt-Igoe. That was a BIG housing project here that was imploded for the very reasons you list. It would not shock me if the Superdome meets the same fate for the very same reasons, structuraly sound or not (and there are doubts about the roof).

Au contraire, I believe that the 10,000 is going to be way LOW.

All the references to bodies floating everywhere; the evacuation is incomplete and the military is going door to door finding the horrors still hidden. Doesn't look hopeful.

Water borne illnesses from coliform bacteria have already begun to claim lives; soon, the mosquitoes will contribute to the toll.

No, I think that many unidentifiable bodies will go uncounted and unreported and well as purposely unreported.

It just looks too awfully bad for all responsible.

I've heard others call it a total loss... not sure why.

To find out why, you only need to answer two questions:

1. How much is it insured for?

2. Who gets to pocket the insurance settlement if it's totalled instead of fixed?

That's what I thought too but I read somewhere that the material would shift and wouldn't be safe for building the town up.

My prayers to you and yours for being of help and for your safety. Unlike we in NY I am sure you have the necessary implements close at hand to defend your family. God Bless.

It probably should. There were murders and rapes there. Too many ghosts.

"I must say . . it's bad form to lobby for a new stadium while the dead bob still in the water, don't you think?"

You may have noticed, this thread doesn't actually *link* to to a story or news item, just what somebody apparently *heard*. Therefore, nobody's really "lobby(ing)" about anything, "don't you think?".
