Superdome to be torn down?
ABC News ^ | 9/5/2005 | Ted Koppel

Posted on 09/05/2005 8:00:10 PM PDT by KarlInOhio

Just heard this on a promo for Nightline during the FSU vs. Miami game at about 10:12 EDT.

Ted Koppel: "The mayor of New Orleans, and it may be a wild exageration, but he said there could be 10,000 dead. And the Superdome, where you broadcast so many of your Monday Night Football games, that, I'm told, is coming down."

not sure why.

It does not make sense to manage a stadium under sea level.

"I've heard others call it a total loss... not sure why."

So federal disaster relief money will go to build a new stadium for the sake of luxury boxes.

I think they should leave it like it is, and make the Democrats go there and be locked in for a week. Give them their own "aroma therapy".

I think the Saints own the building. Well, the Saints have told the city they want out of their binding contract, and I read on the Seattle Post-Intelligencer website a few days ago, the Saints are moving to San Antonio.

I must say . . it's bad form to lobby for a new stadium while the dead bob still in the water, don't you think?

They're probably squeezed all the depreciation out of it that they could. Now it will be declared a total loss and the owners can get their $$$ and move on.

The first thing the mayor wants to spend *my tax dollars* money on IS A *SPORTS STADIUM* ?!

Actually the first thing he wanted was paid Vegas vacations for his police force. Nagin to Offer Free Trips to Las Vegas for N.O. Officers

This guy could have picked a better time to lobby for a new stadium. The dead bodies are still bloating in the streets, and he's thinking about jumbo-trons.

Priorities. Priorities. Priorities.

Maybe they think that they can never get the smell out of it. As for the 10,000 dead, ive got a gut feeling thats going to be way overblown, most of the houses ive seen on tv, the water line is no where near the roof.

I heard the same thing. Then he didn't back it up with anything. Was it a teaser or incompetent journalism? Both is an option.

"I see, condemn anything you want to get a free fed rebuild whether it needs it or not"

That must 'splain it. I don't see why such a drastic course is needed. I liken it to a sturdy old Oak tree. Katrina didn't take it down; it's not going to come down in some little breeze now.

Don't count on the city of San Antonio to get a pro football team. There isn't a fan base large enough for both the Spurs and the Saints. The previous mayor couldn't even get the Hispanic voters to back a soccer team.

It does not make sense to manage a stadium under sea level.

Well, you can say that for the entire city.... It was drier than most everything else.

As long as the Saints play there, that smell will always be there!

It was at least a good teaser - I rarely watch Nightline and I'll be recording it to see what he was talking about.

There would be no foundational damage from non-rushing water levels of a few feet.

I heard it during halftime. The roof almost failed. The Saints wanted a new stadium to remain in the city....now if friendly inspectors red tag it, then a new stadium can be financed with FEMA money at low interest rates.

Bush said he was going to deliver.

A lot of the buildings downtown have electricity....lets see if Koppel shows that.
