HAVANA Cuban President Fidel Castro has offered to send 100 doctors to Houston immediately to help provide medical care to residents of New Orleans who have been evacuated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Another 500 clinicians and specialists could be dispatched to Houston or any other airport of your choosing, by Sunday, Castro said during a TV Roundtable discussion broadcast in Havana with another 500 to follow.
The offer was relayed via e-mail to members of U.S. organizations that have traveled to Havana on commercial licenses in recent months. Members of the USA Rice Federation met with Castro during a visit to Havana to discuss potential sales of U.S. rice on Aug. 25-26.

One one hand, I want our people to get the quickest medical care possible. On the other hand, I question how reliable and competent some of these doctors may be.
One thing for sure, Castro is not making this offer out of the goodness of his heart.
Do we accept the offer? Yes or no? Opinions...anyone?
I say let him send the doctors and watch half of the defect.
I say take them and then see how many of the Cuban MDs voluntarily go back. That will shut Castro up.

...You can certainly bet there are some rather razor sharp strings attached to this offer of help.

My take: If we don't have a doctor shortage, move on.
Accept the offer. Im sure there is an ulterior motive, but it is an offer of help just the same. Plus, as other posters have pointed out, half will probably defect anyway. Well, those that dont have family back at home like another famous defector..
Yea, I can see that. Oh got a cut on your leg, amputate.
He'll send their worst doctors hoping they'll defect.
That's weird. I did a search before posting this article. I typed in Fidel Castro and saw no stories like mine - so I posted it.
You guys underestimate Castro's treachery. Ponder it a while. If I wanted to ensure there were outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, yellow fever and malaria, I wouldn't use soldiers. I'd use doctors.
Also, it's a fair bet that none of those doctors are leaving Cuba without first being made painfully aware that their families will suffer horrible fates if they defect.
C'mon guys...this is Communist Thuggery 101!
No worries. Just tossing in the other links to help readers bulk up on the subject.
It depends upon why they were sent to prison.
Malpractice perhaps?
How will you persuede the doctors to return to Cuba, Fidel?
1. If these were well meaning professional dissidents, Castro wouldn't let them out to help.
2. Castro already has trade deals with Blanco that she was censured for

Therefore, Castro has a motive to get people into LA that benefits him.
No to letting them in!
he will have to send the doctors, each with his own personal guard to prevent his defection...or lock up the doctors family and threaten them with horrible unspeakable acts in order to keep the doctors from defecting.
.....we are not the turd world country....they are...let them keep their witch doctors.
What's he going to do when they apply for asylum? Come to think of it, we could use more doctors.
I say let them in. It would be an eyeopening experience for both them and us.
Yes. We need more trained defectors.

Not to be outdone, Vincente Fox of Mexico declared he has 11,000,000+ 'specialists' already prepositioned and another 3,000,000 are en route ;-)
