Dog, do you think this was the plan all along?

The President knew that Rehnquist's stay would be short because of his health. Do you think he nominated Roberts to be CJ and has been planning to nominate a 'red meat' judge (to actually replace O'Conner) all along?

(That's what I'm thinking as I mull this decision).

Is it a seperate vote for the Senate?

Can they vote for Roberts but not vote for him as Cheif Justice?

I didn't say there was politicking - I said there was politics. A wise leader understands the organizational dynamics of her/his organization. A CJ should have some idea about what is possible and what is not.

He's had more on his watch than any recent President, serious stuff. I don't wonder he's tired. I will begin to pray for his strength and wisdom.

The liberal spin on this will be, "Well, that's reasonable. Let the conservative Roberts replace the conservative Rehnquist. And give us a true moderate to replace the moderate O'Connor."

President Bush, if he really does this, has to know that that will be the liberal demand, pushed hard by the lamestream media.

I hope he doesn't accede to it.

An appointment to a young guy might cause a liberal CJ wannabe to retire.

rts demonstrates two important behaviors. He is organized, and the Chief Justice has to be well organized. Roberts was a clerk under Rehnquist as well so he's familiar with how Rehnquist ran things and will more than likely run the Supreme Court the same way. Secondly, Roberts has a sense of humor. As difficult as some cases are it's a good thing to have someone who will keep a level head and still find some humor. Certainly, it would be nice to see the Supreme Court laugh some of these liberal exercises in judicial activism out of court.

I like Roberts. He was a close friend of Rehnquist and others in the conservative lawyers network, and will not be a Souter.

He is young and could be CJ for 40 years.

He is a natural leader and will have the extra impact on the judiciary that his CJ status allows him to have.

A very good choice.

Wait, just out of curiosity who's going to fill the spot that Sandra Day O'Connor is supposed to resign from? Or has she changed her mind the wake of Rehnquist?

Dear linkinpunk,

"Is it a seperate vote for the Senate?

"Can they vote for Roberts but not vote for him as Cheif Justice?"

No. If Mr. Bush resubmits Mr. Roberts as the nominee for the Chief Justice, the Senate can either approve him as Chief Justice, or reject him altogether. One vote.

An appointment of a young CJ might also cause a old conservative to retire and get replaced with younger.

You misunderstood my post.
Perhaps you should have responded to the poster who mentioned NO in the first place. In any case, I do not think the poster listed NO as a qualification per se.

Scalia won't resign. That would be petty and immature, and he's not either.

He and Thomas also know that the CJ doesn't usually come from within the court. They would have had no expectations that they would be one of the rare exceptions.
