Newsreaders on FoxNews just said a 'Senior administration spokesman' has said Bush plans to nominate Roberts for Chief Justice position.

Not unless she's gay and physically-challenged.
Janice Rodgers Brown..
There will be no 'heat' for not promoting from within.
Skip you nailed it.
" . . . and also assigns who will author the opinions for decisions, both the concurring and dissenting."
Stephen Henderson from "Knight-Ridder" is on C-SPAN Washington Journal and someone called in about the duties of the CJ. Henderson said what you said except when the CJ is in the minority. In that case the next senior justice gets to assign for the majority - "usually Stevens," he said.
Especially after the spin of the dems last week.
Can you imagine the left's reaction.....priceless.
* bump *
There's no question it's cute. Alot better than some of these rags today.
You expect anyone to argue with that? ;)
Maybe each justice should be allowed to put little emblems on their robes representing their universities or law schools. Ohio State uses buckeyes and the University of Georgia uses dog bones. They could get an emblem for each decision they write.
this is what was expected. He's young and reportedly able to reach out to others and persuade their opinions. This is what Rehnquist was believed to have done, and there was always question whether Thomas or Scalia had that ability.
He is to busy at home trying to stop someone from "taking" his property.
But the opinions are important and the Chief Justice assigns who gets to write the majority opinion on a case. The opinions explain the ruling and lay the groundwork for additional decisions. Who would you want writing an opinion in the most effective way for our side, O'Connor or Scalia?
Also Thomas is probably just saying it dont matter because he knows there is no way he is going to be elevated and have to go through more "pubic hair" and porn discussions in senate hearings.
Thomas or Scalia would have been more fair but maybe both didn't want to go through hearings again and same for the administration. That would have been three hearings all together. One for a Chief Justice and two for new Supreme Court justices.
With the New Orleans chaos GWBush decided three hearings were too much
During the Thomas hearings I had my doubts about him. He had only been a judge for a few years and at only 35, I realized that we would be stuck with him for a long time.
Well, we all know how that worked out and I am mighty glad that 41 didn't ask for my opinion!
I had read that Scalia would resign if he didn't get chief justice. I think this is a slap in the face to both he and Thomas.
Not that my vote counts, but I hope Dubya picks Garza or Brown. Garza has a solid record as a states-rights advocate. JRB appears to have a strong libertarian streak in her rulings, plus the obvious EEO characteristics. It doesn't look like Luttig is on the short list (we need to defeat a few more Dem senators first), which is a shame because he is supposed to be quite conservative and extremely, extremely [intellectually] sharp. I could live with Jones and Clement, too. Another post said Clement would be the choice because she was a) runner up for O'Connor's slot and b) she is from N.O. I think the latter is too obvious and the MSM would make hay about "pandering" or something like that.
All the pundits have been wrong before. Remember, Roberts came out of nowhere.
