This supports a theory I heard espoused by William Kristol. The theory was that Roberts would replace O'Connor until the time that Rehnquist retired, then Roberts would be recommended as CJ and someone else would come in as a regular justice. Kristol said it would be difficult for the Senate to confirm Roberts as a regular justice, then turn around and nix him as CJ. Kristol said this the day or two after Roberts was nominated.

IDEA DESERVES SOME THOT: Could someone explain why this matters so much. It's not like the Chief Justice gets two votes. As far as I'm concerned, make Ginsburg Chief and nominate a Scalia-like replacement for Rehnquist's spot. Makes it look like Bush "compromised."

I really don't know how Bush kept his composhure during that announcement. I never knew it was going on until I saw another video.

Why did Mom dress that kid up like it was 1960 all over again?

You just named all the KNOWN choices....look for the next pick not to be on that list.

Bush surprises people all the time...

I wish the President would make another nomination right away because the slim conservative plurality on the Courts is gone.

Interesting that the Pres and Mr Roberts are in the Oval Office on Labor Day - 8Am - suit and tie. All the usual instant response Dem Senators are either still in bed or at their summer home. Ditto demagogic news media talking heads and producers. With news cycles being what they are, the nomination will be 24 hours old before the dems get caught up.

I agree, and Tony Snow was just on FNC saying he doesn't think it will be Alberto Gonzales, or a "gimmick" pick!

He did it this morning. I really wanted Scalia but I believe Bush only wanted 2 confirmation hearings instead of 3.

This begs the question; Is Gonzales next?

Nothing wrong with the way they dressed their kids in my opinion.

The Washington Post fashion editor was dispictable in the way they went after Mrs Roberts.

I guess she was upset because young Jack did not have baggy jeans with his underwear showing and bling-bling hanging around his neck, and the little girl did not have her belly showing.

So CJ is really just the person who calls the meeting to order and nothing else.

Not completely true. Chief Justice also gets to pick who writes the rulings which effects the law. Its not just 5-4 we win, its how the ruling is phrased which provides guidance to the lower courts on what the law is and how similar cases are expected to be handled. A minor deal but the CJ also sets the rules for how the court runs. Rennqueist for example said in their meetings that no one justice can talk more than once until all other justices have spoken. Also, if a CJ is a good politician he can have considerable power in shaping the outcome of a vote and even which issues get taken up by the court.

Now everyone should pray that Pres. Bush makes an excellent choice for the O'Connor seat, and does it this week.

I'd like to hope that the N.O. social disaster raises JRB's stock.

But, you know how after the abuse you have been taking becomes JUST TOO MUCH, you run out to get ice cream?

I fear that Gonzales will be Bush's ice cream sundae.

IIRC, the CJ only decides who writes majority opinions if the CJ votes with the majority. Otherwise, it is based on seniority, I believe.

That is how lots of us dress our children and grandchildren here on the East Coast. Looked totally normal to me. As a matter of fact I have a photo holding my then 3-yr old son at the front portico of the White House, and he was wearing his best summer outfit - blue seersucker Cacherel bermuda shorts.

The most important question is, "Will the next Chief Justice be sporting those stupid gold stripes?"

Without knowing having any SCOTUS experience to judge by, Thomas IMO was clearly the best choice with Scalia being very acceptable also.
