Kuwait Pledges $500M for Hurricane Relief Updated: Sunday, Sep. 4, 2005 - 11:26 AM
KUWAIT CITY (AP) - The oil-rich Persian Gulf state of Kuwait said Sunday it will donate $500 million in aid to U.S. relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina.
The offer is the largest known put forward since the hurricane ravaged Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and follows a $100 million aid donation from the emir of a Mideast neighbor, Qatar.
Kuwait's energy minister said his country would provide "oil products that the disaster-stricken states need in addition to other humanitarian aid."
"It's our duty as Kuwaitis to stand by our friends to lighten the humanitarian misery and as a payback for the many situations during which Washington helped us through the significant relations between the two friendly countries," Sheik Ahmed Fahd Al Ahmed Al Sabah said in a statement carried by Kuwait's official news agency, KUNA.
Kuwait is one of America's closest Mideast allies and owes its 1991 liberation from Iraqi occupation forces to a U.S.-led coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's army out.
Kuwait and Qatar's donations came as the Egypt-based 22-member Arab League called on Arab nations to provide relief to the U.S.
The Arab League said that its secretary-general, Amr Moussa, sent a cable of "deep condolences and regret to the U.S. administration over the effect of Hurricane Katrina ... and called on all Arab countries to extend aid to the United States to face the exceptional humane circumstances."
Thanks for the ping.
And thank you, Kuwait. Much appreciated, even though your minister's comments were not.
Kuwait has had some terrorists. Either during the build-up for Iraq or soon after we went in, they had a few men who carried out attacks on some of our forces.
I'd forgotten their prompt repayment for DS/DS, and I hadn't known about their refueling program.
So, apologies for my previous pessimism toward them.
The city of Orleans is running a fund raiser, and has offered to take 50 students for the next year. Sorry, just woke up; too brainfried right now to dig out the article link. Might google on Orleans and relief.
Osama is not gonna like this.
Thank you Kuwait and Qatar.
Thank you.
Are YOU making fun of ME??? LOL!
"I called Doctors Without Borders [Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)} today, asking what help they would be providing to the New Orleans (and elsewhere) Katrina victims."
"I had donated $500 to MSF just a few weeks ago."
"The answer, summarized, was "We don't provide help to developed countries.""
"Meaning, MSF will provide nothing, ZERO, to help the victims of Katrina. The answer was quite unambiguous."
"Fool me once, fool me twice. "
*snip*
On behalf of the American people, I wish to thank Kuwait for their support.

"Lets se that's a dollar for you and 2 for me!"
Thanks.
Hum. I see Sri Lankra but what about Thailand? This is a county while not extremely wealthy have bunches of money to spend on their military and while supposedly an ally (of sorts), won't be getting any donations from me if they get hit with another tsunami. Afghanistan was more than generous given their situation. I hope they the Thais learn to swim next time
yes Im bitter but probably for other reasons too, not really relevant here.
Basic Question? Who will they give it to?
And in other news, wealthy Saudi princes donate tens of millions to Al Qaeda, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, etc.Ever hear of "protection money"?

Thank you, Kuwait and Qatar! Proof positive that not all Muslims or Arabs hate us.There's people here it won't convince.

Nice to see that Kuwait remembers our help for them about 14-15 years ago. Thanks to the Emir.
Middle aged Kuwaitis are definitely grateful. When I was there last and the beginning of this year, they would come up to us and offer to buy us sodas and thank American soldiers when they saw us. Younger Kuwaitis may not be as pro-American because they get propagandized in the madrassas and Hitler Youth, I mean Muslim Youth organizations.
The Kuwaitis think highly of Bush 41 - as well they should. Perhaps their donation will be to the former Presidents' fund.
Thank you Kuwait.
"They don't even like the Palestinians. "
Only because they look down on them as sub-arabs.
