Afghanistan pledges $100k to Katrina efforts

Afghanistan's government has pledged to give $100,000 to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, The United States embassy said on Sunday.

President Hamid Karzai made the pledge in a letter sent to US Ambassador Ronald Neumann. 'On behalf of the US embassy, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the people of Afghanistan,' Neumann said in a statement.

'Their compassion and generosity bears testimony to the strength of the ties between our two peoples.'

Afghanistan's cash-strapped government relies heavily on financial aid from the United States and elsewhere. Most of the country is impoverished and there is little infrastructure outside of a handful of cities.

Reminds me of people who had nothing, trying to survive New Orleans, and were splitting what gasoline they had left over with others, and taking nothing in return. Absolutely incredible.

I sure hope someone puts together a list of donations from our U.S. Congressmen. I'll bet Afghanistan puts them to shame when all's said and done.

My exact thoughts as well -- it's not the quantity, it's the gesture. Thanks, Afghanistan!

They didn't have to do it.

We all appreciate it.

But then, I look at it as a sort of "tax refund".

Here's an incomplete list of nations helping the US as of 9/2/05:

"I (Secretary Rice) want to express the heartfelt thanks of the President, the United States Government and all Americans, to the leaders and citizens of the many nations and international organizations that have already offered kind and generous support....You have the updated list of countries from every corner of the globe that are offering their help, countries like Canada and Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Israel, China, Azerbaijan, the Philippines, El Salvador, Australia, Turkey and many others. I want to note in particular that we received a generous offer of support from Sri Lanka, a country that, as we speak, is still recovering from its own massive natural disaster. Every contribution is important; and over the past few days, I have been in contact with a wide range of officials from other nations and international organizations to respond to these offers of support." Will give you contact info if anyone wants to join me in thanks the various Govts. for their aid. And just for information sake. Quit a lot of aid is being sent. Here is just a short list of aid from Europe. This only covers some of the gas and oil

Portugal is sending 2% of their Stategic Oil Reserve to the US Canada: Prime Minister Paul Martin has announced the release of 30,000 barrels of gasoline and oil for U.S. use. (Go Canada!) France said it had agreed to contribute the equivalent of 92,000 barrels of oil per day in refined products – mainly petrol (Bravo Paris!) Spain said it will release 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.(Way to go Spain!) The German Economy Ministry said the country would contribute about 6% of the total. That would be about 120,000 barrels a day. (The right stuff Berlin!) Switzerland intended to provide the 360,000 barrels of petrol from its emergency reserves. (A huge thank you to the Swiss people.) In the 60 years since the obligatory Swiss reserves were created they have never once been touched. Britain said it plans to release 73,000 barrels of oil a day for the next 30 days. (Cheers to our loyal British allies)Britain to release 2.2m barrels of oil to avert fuel crisis (Japan) to release 60M barrels of oil, gas The governments of 26 countries have agreed to release the equivalent of two million barrels of oil per day from strategic reserves to cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the International Energy Agency said. The International Energy Agency will provide up to 60 million barrels of crude oil and gasoline from its emergency stockpiles. The combined 60 million barrels will translate into an added 2 million barrels of petroleum products entering the market each day, according to the Energy Department. In U.S. measure, a barrel equals 42 gallons. Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Japan are expected to send the bulk of these supplies, mostly in the form of refined products.

I heard that Sri Lanka contributed $1 million. They are still cleaning up from the tsunami. Fox News read off a list the other day and it was longer than I thought it would have been.
I don't have the list, sorry.

Well, the message of the "widow's mite" was that "Give and you shall receive," and you cannot be blessed unless you are a blessing to others. That is another reason we must take this money---you can't cut off someone else's blessing, but must allow them to give.

I see this all the time: "Here, let me buy that lunch," "Oh, no, I can't let you do that." Fine. You just lost a blessing.
