Qatar gives 100 million dollars for US hurricane relief 1 hour, 26 minutes ago

DOHA (AFP) - The Gulf emirate of Qatar announced it will donate 100 million dollars to relief efforts for the US victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The aid was granted by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani "in the name of the government and the Qatari people," the official news agency QNA said.

Quoting a foreign ministry spokesman, QNA said: "Qatar expresses its sympathy and its solidarity to the US people and government in these painful circumstances and sends its condolences to the families of the victims in this humanitarian catastrophe."

Three other Arab countries -- Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates -- have also offered aid to the United States.

If 15 billion barrels of proven and recoverable reserves isn't a lot, I guess. If you think $1 trillion is walking around money, I suppose.

Excuse me. But every TV station in the Arab world is state run. There are no private stations. Qatar could stop the anti-Iraqi crap on it's alJazeera station tomorrow.

In natural gas, maybe but I don't think they have even that much. Qatar isn't that big. They don't do oil like their Saudi Cousins do.

When the NYT and CNN are thoroughly pro-American, we can toss rocks at others for not regulating their media. Meanwhile, here in the corporeal world, giving $100 million freely to help victims of a natural disaster is both kind and generous.

The point is, AlJazeera is state funded, and state run and state sanctioned. Nothing gets said or done on that station without approval from the Gov't.

Sorry, you are just wrong. Saudi Arabia is of course much, much larger than Qatar. But the density of oil deposits is quite similar, making Qatar one of the most oil rich countries on earth. Yes it is tiny. But it produces as much oil as Alaska.

Re: How bout it France?

From an article in the Washington Times:

France, "determined to show its solidarity with the United States," offered a range of aircraft and two ships, with helicopters and planes capable of airlifting tons of supplies, a disaster unit with 20 soldiers, a civil defense detachment of 35 persons and an airborne emergency unit, the French Embassy said.

The French city of Orleans is rallying to help its American namesake.

The city plans to donate money raised from ticket sales at local sports matches to help hurricane victims in New Orleans, city officials said. Orleans and its university also have offered to take in 50 students from the University of New Orleans for the school year.

Orleans, 75 miles south of Paris, is best known as the city saved by Joan of Arc. In 1429, she and her troops freed the city from a siege by the English. New Orleans was founded in 1718 by French settlers and named after the Duke of Orleans, who was regent of France at the time.

I can't believe you refuse to accept that this a gov't that is actively using it's TV and radio stations to undermine our efforts in Iraq. And it's getting our guys and gals killed, along with 10's of thousands of Iraqis.
Sure, we'll take their money, they owe us big time.
But let's not fool ourselves. It's political. That's all.
