PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 40 began deploying a detachment of 125 personnel to Gulfport, Miss., Sept. 1 to provide humanitarian assistance and conduct debris removal in the aftermath of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

The detachment will lend support to the 22nd Seabee Readiness Group in disaster recovery operations.

Twenty-seven NMCB 40 Seabees comprised the first group to deploy to the Gulf Coast, with the remaining Seabees scheduled to deploy sometime during the same week.

NMCB 40 is currently at its homeport for a 10-month training period.

My mom always confuses SEALs and Seabees.

I patiently explain the difference, without being patronizing, but I have nearly given up now...

Well, the two are pretty close. One clue is that if the shifter knobs on the 'dozers are severed heads, they're SEALs.

Wasn't Gulfport at one time the home of the SeeBees?

Don't know. Perhaps one of the Seabees on FR can answer that.

Gulfport was, or is still, home of NMCB 133, of whom my little brother was part of until he retired.

Seabees Can Do.

I checked their site; Gulfport is still home to NMCB 133. They just need a few more hands right now.

"Can Do!"
I've been waiting for the Seabees to get deployed here. Things are gonna start moving now! With both the Seabees and the Army Corps of Engineers on the job, my hopes for New Orleans just rose measurably.

Gulfport is the home of the East Coast battalions, Port Hueneme is the home for the west coast. This is a first in Seabee history that west coast deployed to the east to help. NMCB 133 are to relieve us in less than a month in Iraq, I am hoping they are not delayed. I know Gulfport Bees are helping cleaning up the city, but haven't heard anything about the Bees going to N.O. If the Army Corps of engineers are in charge of rebuilding N.O. then god help us. I am not impressed with them over here, and that is putting it kindly.
