Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Jesse Jackson has arrived in Louisiana...

This has most likely been asked & answered, but I can't keep up with all the threads on NO/LA and have not seen this as a news item.

Since Miss Mary has declared open season on looters by the US military, has martial law been declared at the federal level for either NO or LA? If so, just NO? LA? All hurricane affected states?

Thanks.

What he did today should have been done Wednesday

I got flamed for saying he should have gotten off Air Force One on his way back to Washington and taken a quick preliminary chopper tour. Now he's behind the story.

I've been wondering something. This is showing my conservative bias (anti-government bureaucracy)...but could some of this be due to the EXTRA layers of red tape after FEMA became part of Homeland Security?

Why don't they know what I know about preparedness etc.??

You really can't prepare for a flood. The only thing you can do is get away from it.

That the local government in NO evacuated their families, but not their citizens, is criminal. (Of course, that's MHO)

I live on long island. It cannot be evacuated, no chance, impossible. the best our hurricane plans calls for is to move people who live within 5 miles of the south shore, north. where they would put us, I don't know.

I have gotten really discouraged about Bush's "bad" public relations...

I have to believe that he just tells them that he doesn't want any "Well "i" have done this, "i" have done that"...he just doesn't toot his horn...

And when the dems, and MSM go after him...he doesn't care.

I think hearing the Helicopters are calming the crowds.

Just got back online and watching TV. Looks like things are picking up. I bet you are right about the helicopters...it would be a sweet sound. I imagine a lot of these people are in shock.

Wolf Blitzer: "People are saying that if this had happened in a predominantly white area, the response would have been faster."

Answer: "Possibly. It would depend on whether they shot at their rescuers."

How long would it have been till the first story came out that Bush in the airspace kept people on their rooftop and they died?

Agreed, but not sure I blame them at this point for reaching out to the feds, watching the hellhole their city has become thanks to their local government.
