28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

This is why NO has survived almost 300 years. It certainly wasn't because the climate was so healthful! But the nation NEEDS the port. And there will be a city there because of trade (like many important cities in bad places, trade talks, health walks.) Houston nor Mobile can carry it all.

Some day, maybe, when the Old river controls give way and the mississippi sends most of its water down the Achafalaya, then the rebuilt Morgan City might the the city that's essential. But right now, its the river and its nexus of trade that make New Orleans needful.

3:07 P.M. - BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- U.S. Sen. David Vitter said FEMA's efforts to deal with the hurricane have been completely ineffective, and he called the federal government's response a failure.

"I think FEMA has been completely dysfunctional and is completely overwhelmed, and I don't know why. This situation was utterly predictable," said Vitter, R-Metairie. "It seems like there was no coherent plan, which I don't understand because this precise scenario has been predicted for 20 years," he said.

3:03 P.M. - BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Three New Orleans-area hospitals remain open. The Louisiana Hospital Association says they're asking their workers to report.

Those are East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero and Ochsner Clinic Foundation in Metairie.

The hospital association says all three have power, air-conditioning and security, and remain committed to serving their communities during these difficult times.

PS: Guy on news says about 300k still in NOLA with about 10k getting rescued daily at this point.

Someone needs to reply back that making comments at the Superdome won't do much good either. It isn't like his arrival cures the ills there.

It is, however, a helpful clue as to what some of those "ills" are. There's a serious "I'm entitled to be served" mentality there.

I mean, think: these folks are just lying around the #*&^$# Super Dome, waiting for stuff to be handed to them. You'd think that they'd have at least organized a few things among themselves, but they apparently did nothing of the sort.

It's what W gets paid for. He's like a professional boxer though - put him on the ropes and he gets a second wind.

They always "misunderestimate" him.

Fox doing another hit piece on the Astrodome....little 2 year old was so happy to have an apple, but she has no shoes. People having to wait because the Astrodome folks are screening people that arrive there. I despise the press. How many times have I said that today?

Ed Young was on with Dan Patrick (sitting in for Laura Ingraham) this morning. He's mobilized a faith force in Houston, Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, Muslims, etc. to bring "bread" first to these people.

He specifically said that all faiths agreed to bring aid first and concern themselves with distributing their particular brand of religion at a later date. The groups organized to take three week spans of bringing aid to those in the Astrodome.

Gotta scoot peeps.

Be in over the weekend as I can.

Hang tough all, the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter by the minute. No rose glasses though, surprises still possible, but the relief effort is online and in full swing now.

You know, I have felt that way when I view the garbage strewn everywhere. They could go loot some trash bags and clean up. I know I would be thinking of things like that to keep myself busy.

Yes, and I meant Fineman, not Finestein. I hope the President comes out ahead on this, just to make Chrissy cry.

I just sent the link to Chris Matthews -- who is now on the attack along with the rest of the MSM... I'm throwing all their comments right back in their faces and reminding them which party runs the inner cities of this country.

that situation at I10 has been going on for a long time now, I do not understand it. As I recall from yesterday, the reason that location is collecting alot of people is because the choppers drop the rescued people there, boats that rescue people are launched/return there, and people walking to safety arrive to that spot. so it collects alot of people, and therefore needs alot of buses.

Howard Fineman on MSNBC; evidently Newsweek will be coming out with a HUGE hit piece on Bush next week.

All of its 500 subscribers will be outraged after reading that!

Fineman is a minion of evil.

He services evil.

Good always trumps evil.

Fineman and these people will pay.
