Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

I knew that! I lived in NO East in different places from 68-80. Got out there while they were building a lot of the wetlands into housing. We used to get chased by these huge mosquitos and it was a mile to the busline. My junior high was 20 miles away because they hadn't built a middle school out there yet.

When Camille blew up there was no way my daddy was going to stay there.

So we left, and it took four or five hours to get across NO.

"WWL- Interviewed a New Orleans Police officer that got in his patrol car, quit, and drove west...
Says no leadership, no support...

And hopefully no pension for this coward."

And how about Grand Theft Auto for starters.

...[Nagin] backed Bush for president in 2004...

I keep on hearing this said, but I don't think it is true. Nagin certianly made appearances with Kerry, even attending fundraisers. And Wikipedia says he "reluctantly" endorsed Kerry.

Howard Fineman on MSNBC; evidently Newsweek will be coming out with a HUGE hit piece on Bush next week.

He basically said nobody criticized him during 9-11 because we were attacked by a foreign entity, but all bets are off now.

Your point on rail infrastructure damage is well-taken. This will have a major impact on commodities availability (not to mention pricing) in the next few months. This is also why rebuilding NO is an important issue - you need to have a city to man a port, and THIS is the port. Boats in, boats out; rail in, rail out. The farmers who need transportation to move crops are in for a tough row, as are those nations who rely on our coal and agri exports. There is NO OTHER practical way to move this amount of material.

What it means is that Grande Isle was not in the eyewall. It was to the west of it. Port Sulfer and Delecroix and Venice, now they took it on the chin.

The wikpedia article says he had supported Bush in the past, probably 2000, but reluctantly supported Kerry in 2004. But, he supported the republican candidate for governor over Blanco... could we have some political payback going on? Nothing worse than a scorned woman.

Now he's saying that Bush is basically an open target for all the pent up rage against him now because he's in a political role, not a CIC role during war time.

Howlin, in all fairness, I think Fineman is blaming the HSD and the way it was put together by congress.

Soul, and the beauty of it is, and which I think just scares the hell out of liberals, is that these groups are so successful. What these groups have done, and what the average American, regardless of race, has done is say to the world . . .We don't need the government to help us, we can take care of our own.

Now if you will allow me a disclaimer on the above statement: Of course there will be times when the gov't, no matter at what level, should be there to assist its people. My point is that what we Americans tend to forget in times of peace and quiet, is that we are all Americans and we will help each other out no matter what the cost. (remember the San Francisco quake? How many strangers were helping strangers. Again, can I say 911?)
