Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Anyone hear this VA Sheriff on CNN? They got a call on Wed. from Jefferson Parish to come down, then Thursday as they were on the road the Louisiana State Police told them not to come down.

As I watch Geraldo pontificate and splutter away, my mind drifts to something that Roger said on the Rush Limbaugh show today.

He said something to the effect that the media is focusing on the bad things (doh!!) and criticizing FEMA, the police, the Feds etc. But there is one group that is chugging along and has done more for those people than anyone else. And that is the faith-based army. (I LOVE that phrase that W used!) He stated that these faith-based groups not only are feeding and watering and giving some medical care to the poor people of stricken areas but they are also giving them something that governmental agencies don't; compassionate care. By that I mean that they are not only caring for them physically but spirtually as well. And we all know, any allusion to God or any other deity in the course of doing gov'tal work is outlawed!!

God bless every single faith-based group, regardless of church affliation. Those people are truly doing the Lord's work.

I hope that the President and his team are making the full weight of his authority brutually clear with Gov Blanco and Mayor Nagin.

They can either have their politics, or they can have their reconstruction. They cannot have both. Please decide.

NO East was in the mouth of a surge funnel. So was St. Bernard Parish.

Look at the levee maps.

This was well known long before the storm.

Wow. Amazing account. And they had it all thrown together at the drop of the hat. Apparently it had already been planned for years in the event that Galveston took a hit. And THAT, my FRiend, is what a proper disaster plan looks like.

I saw some pics from Grand Isle, and it is hurt bad, but there was more standing than I suspected and five people lived through the storm coming in. Was truly, truly amazed.

Apparantly he is a moderate (liberal) republican.***

Thanks to all who responded to me!

Seems Nagin is a man with no core... ANYTHING to WIN.

"Days before filing for the New Orleans Mayoral race in February 2002, Nagin switched his party registration to the United States Democratic Party, presumably in order to improve his chances of winning the race in heavily Democratic New Orleans."

Oh, I LOVE this! BTW... I understand professional animal volunteer groups came in to rescue pets in NOLA... they are another aspect of mobilization, so anyone complaining that the bus was used for dogs and not people ... tough! When you get a pet it's forever and you need to include them in your disaster plans.

I suspect you've never had experience with open voice loops. It can sound pretty disorganized, but things are generally better than they sound.

Yes, if by military experience with comms, I have plenty of experience.

- I have been listening as the NG has begged for help from the state police at the Super Dome.

- I listened last night as the NG was begging the NOPD and LSP to stay and not leave. The NG needed personal protection from the crowds.

- I listened as they asked if food/water had been delievered to the Convention Center yesterday and the answer was I don't know. The debacle at the Convention Center was only on the news for the past three days.

- I listened today when they were inquiring why 8,000 to 10,000 are dropped off on a I-10 and Causeway highway and no one knew why? No commands had been given to buses or military trucks that this was only for medical evacuation and that had been abandoned.

I could provide many other examples of lack of command and disorganization if you wish.

Agreed.

The Faith based groups are doing outstanding work, the same groups people mock and ridicule are stepping up and there for these citizens in severe troubles. The same groups the President has worked to strengthen since his Presidency.

God's people for which we're very blessed.

Im watching WWLTV.com.

Several big Helicopters (capacity 12 to 16) and a reporter present at I10 and causeway.
Masses of people (1000s easily) waiting for rescue. The sick are being flown out 1st.

I think hearing the Helicopters are calming the crowds.
More come to the area as some leave.
Some paramedics present and doing doing what they can with small triage tents.
The heat is taking a toll.
The crowd is getting water and food though.
Buses on the way.

i turned over to watch that reckless driver mispronounce two simple words in 30 seconds while explaining how the Iraq war has caused a manpower shortage...

then wolfie will fill us in on how racism is the reason the people are not getting help....

sheesh, no bias here...
