28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

She keeps begging for federal cash. I am listening to it right now. No one will convince me she is not corrupt and evil after this one.
Nice sarcasm, but completely off base. We got aid to thailand faster than this. Inexcusable.
Uh, actually, no we didn't.
It took six days alone for elements of Seventh Fleet to get to the Bay of Bengal. I understand your frustration with the fact that we have not been able to magically move 200,000 people from point a to point b, but road movement of the equivalent of two divisions takes time.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
i just checked my international channels and TV India is running a "how to help them" of some sorts for New Orleans with numbers to donate too...cool!
Al Jazeera is showing the chaos and tsk tsk tsking the infidels
Korea, CCTV, and NHK are on regular prog.
All the schools should be shut down and all the buses in the country sent in to remove the affected. All communties in America should welcome all refugees. After all we are the greatest country in the world. I will for one be in New Orleans, asap with my pickup to help someone join my community. I challenge all Freepers to do the same. President Bush, I challenge you to do whatever is necessary. Forget education, lets take care of our own. 3 weeks can be regained during scheduled vacations. Everyone speak out! Let's git 'er done! 'Cuz we can! We are the voice!
I sourced my last "made up" assertion with regard to Thailand, here's the source for the one wrt Falluja. After 5days most of the city was secured, about 80%. Compared to the opposite in NO.
Think before you accuse

More of Fallujah Secured, Mosul Comes Under Fresh Attack
By Nick Simeone
Voice of America News
"Washington, November 12, 2004 -- After five days of fighting, U.S. and Iraqi forces are now said to be in control of nearly all of Fallujah..."
I stopped watching after I watched them leave a dog in a tree and then pulled a man off of a roof and left his dog.
WASHINGTON - It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said of federal assistance for hurricane-devastated New Orleans.
Democratic lawmakers from Louisiana were quick to disagree Thursday and Hastert sought to clarify the comment during the day.
"It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed," the Illinois Republican said in an interview about New Orleans Wednesday with the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill.
Louisiana Rep. Charlie Melancon called the comments irresponsible and Sen. Mary L. Landrieu urged Hastert to focus on the humanitarian crisis at hand.
Hastert, in a transcript supplied by the suburban Chicago newspaper, said there was no question that the people of New Orleans would rebuild their city, but noted that federal insurance and other federal aid was involved. "We ought to take a second look at it. But you know we build Los Angeles and San Francisco on top of earthquake fissures and they rebuild too. Stubbornness."
There are "some real tough questions to ask," Hastert said in the interview. "How do you go about rebuilding this city? What precautions do you take?"
Asked in the interview whether it made sense to spend billions rebuilding a city that lies below sea level, he replied, "I don't know. That doesn't make sense to me."
Hastert later issued a statement saying he was not "advocating that the city be abandoned or relocated."
"My comments about rebuilding the city were intended to reflect my sincere concern with how the city is rebuilt to ensure the future protection of its citizens and not to suggest that this great and historic city should not be rebuilt," the statement said.
Thanks for that information on Jeff G. I'm SOOOOOO happy he is out of there. I've been glued to Fox, but was not home this AM, so missed it. I'm relieved.
I wish they could surround that area of the city, and wait these rats out. Let them self destruct. God help those who are caught in that hellhole who are innocent.
Lol it sure seems like it I'm on here a lkot and at all hours and you seem to be here all the time. You are ok?
Roger.
"Jesse Jackson on LK just stated he believes people are exagerating about the snipers shooting at rescuers.
Comparing NO to Iraq. We don't run from snipers in Iraq."
We run from snipers if we're not armed, and most of the people doing rescue work in NO are unarmed. Why didn't Jesse ask his new-found friend, the Governor, what she was going to do about the snipers?
Well..he's right..and wrong. I lived through all those hurricanes too- and can say it was about this many days before FEMA..etc showed up en masse.
I clearly remember the rumblings on the radio..people calling the station..we're stranded here- no food, water etc. It was an eye-opener for me.
I realized how conditioned I'd become to expect "them" to DO something.
Saw it and now he's showing the senate in action tonight.
Yup, on CSPAN2 now!
If Snowball is an animal(I did not see a mention in the article), they can contact this organization that is in town doing pet rescues:

The military, read National Guard, can and will do security. They are being sworn in by the state of Louisiana to do just that because Louisiana sure the hell can't handle security.
I have a classmate in Japan that says they are playing the coverage a lot there. I think someone said it is running in Russia quite a bit, too.
thanks, book mark for later.
Nice to know the government will protect us.
I read a post a few days ago that said that Justice Thomas got out of NO before the storm hit and was fine.
