Some people are misunderstanding the nature of this threat. IMHO, this is not a strategic all out 'toe to toe' nuclear conflict...which China will lose, and lose badly.

This is an asymmetric high stakes game of 'chicken'.

It starts with conventional weapons and involves trading lots of their low cost surface ships or submarines for several of our extremely costly nuclear carriers...which are critical to our capability to project power.

Then it moves to a limited nuclear exchange trading several cities in the US for several in China. China is betting that we would not launch a preemptive all out nuclear assault over Taiwan.

Actually, Wei Jingsheng is someone that I admire very much. He was imprisoned for many years for speaking out against his country. My question is, why do we have to get into a war with China? Let them have Taiwan. At this point, with war after war, we don't need to get into yet another war, and especially not one with China - which would be nuclear. What is Taiwan to us, that we would feel the need to defend it? [Probably not Wei Jingsheng's sentiment, but mine.] I just don't want to get into a nuclear war with China.

This would be a really poor choice of timing for China to even think of taking on the US. There are a bunch of annoyed citizens that aren't ready to take any lip from foreign powers just now.

I would appreciate everyone who knows any Chinese of any alertness and IQ of any significance at all to ask them the following sort of question.

"Say--do you think China will attack Taiwan and the USA BEFORE or AFTER the Olympics.

I'd love to have our networks polled on that score.

It's still hard for me to discern that. Could well be before as they think they could recover if they attack in 2006.

. . . in time for the Olympics.

On the other hand, some may not want to risk it and wait until after 2008.

"Growing nationalist sentiment in China also has led to public calls for war over Taiwan."

If this can be believed, it's one of the more alarming comments made on the subject.

Ever wonder what the world would be like if FDR would have let Patton drive on through Russia, and across China?

This doesn't surprise me at all. I've read a number of prophetic words regarding nuclear war and China and Russia (our friends?). Americans need to pray and fast over these possibilities.

"China's Hu Postpones Visit to Washington"
Updated: Saturday, Sep. 3, 2005 - 4:20 PM

By JOE McDONALD
Associated Press Writer

BEIJING (AP) -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Hu talked with Bush by phone and the two leaders agreed to postpone a meeting planned for Wednesday "due to the special condition faced with the U.S. government in handling with the serious disaster caused by Hurricane Katrina," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The White House also said Saturday that Bush had to cancel his meeting with Hu because of the hurricane's aftermath but the two leaders agreed to meet in New York on the sidelines of the U.N. meeting in mid-September.

The Chinese statement didn't say whether Hu also was postponing other parts of his U.S. itinerary that included a speech Thursday at Yale University _ Bush's alma mater.

But officials in the state of Washington said Hu had postponed the majority of his itinerary there, including a two-day stopover in Seattle."

Nuclear war?
ummm... okay.
But only if they promise to take out New Orleans.

I've really had enough of that place and the despicable behavior of the locals.

(y'know, I always wanted to go to the 'Big Easy', despite all the crap I heard. It's the only major mainland US city I have not yet visited. After this fiasco, I just wish it would all just wash away into the Gulf. I would rather visit Mephistopheles in hell first.)
