President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

To repeat from an earlier post, I heard the Army Corp of Engineers guy on the news this evening. He said, once the levees are repaired (he estimated 4 days for that job), he said it would take 3 to 6 months to drain the city!

Heard (from somewhere deep in the bowels of the Katrina threads) that the storm took an unpredicted turn.
I've been meaning to tell you, Dog. You saw this coming when the storm exited Florida and called this one accurately from the very first thread. It didn't happen exactly the way we thought it would -- and it looked okay right after the storm -- but you've called this from the very beginning. I'm flabbergasted by it all.
They rode through the neighborhoods with LOUD SPEAKERS all day Saturday and Sunday.
Approximately 100,000 people left.
Most of the people were together in houses to ride out the storm; now if they didn't know there was a storm coming, how did they know to get together to ride out the storm?

All I know about the levee system is that there is no way I would live in a town that is below sea level near to the Gulf or ocean not to mention having the Mississippi River flow right near where I lived. I have been in New Orleans and was not too impressed to see all the earthen levee's to keep back all the water. Not very reassuring to this land lover!
Can remember back the early 90's when the Mississippi River was way above flood stage and I crossed it in St. Louis with the water lapping at the bottom of the bridge. I was so shook when I got to the Missouri side I got out of the car to calm down. My kids will never forget that drive across the river and I would never do it again.

You order folks on to a SCHOOL Bus, then that bus rolls in the rain 40 miles outside of town, killing 30....
The storm TURNS, and is no theat to NO.
Who eats the lawsuit liability for those 30 deaths? The City? The School District? The Bus Driver??

I'm no city planner, but what about keeping several military cargo planes there to help evacuate, and what about having a 24-hour-plan to get everyone out of the city? One route for personal vehicles (both lanes going out), one route for mass transit (all city busses ferry everyone they can out for free), keep commercial planes flying in (but empty), etc.?
It sounds to me that they were just praying it would never happen.
How would they have processed 70,000 people before the storm hit. They barely got hte people in they had in time for the storm. Remember all those scary combs they showed us, those people trying to smuggle in the dome.
Speaking of leadership, I was watching TWC and Jim Cantore and his partner commented at how the Mayor of Gulfport "rocked" and they were excited at how he seemed to be leading the people left in the community. Stark difference from NO.
I'm afraid though that tomorrow is another day.
I am going to have to stop watching and/or caring shortly.
In New Orleans the rail road tracks are washed out in places. They were showing this on WWL streaming.

Governor is awful. Likes to do face time with Larry King. Even if she couldn't do much she should have sounded firm. "I've ordered the NG to ...," etc.

This White House has, as usual in such situations, been masterful in dealing with hurricane Katrina. The American people are not going to cotton any cheap political shots from the left.
Everyone knows, and is told before a storm strikes, that individuals are pretty much on their own for 48-72 hours. We did not even know that the levees in New Orleans broke until Monday night. No one realized the extent of flooding there until the sun came up on Tuesday morning.
Yet boots are on the ground now and more help is on the way.
The fact is, and I know this is not anyone's focus right now, the President's poll numbers are going to rise as a result of first rate efforts by those he leads. FEMA, the DoD, Coast Guard, DHS, HHS, etc. are in good hands because they are headed by good people. The Bush administration gets boo-koo credit for that.
Don't let the gas prices get too far out of hand, and there is nothing to worry about on the political front.

Bump. And Molly Hennenberg reporting for FOXNews relayed a few minutes ago that The Red Cross wished her to relay to the viewers that clean underwear and socks were much needed, and doctors relayed to Molly to get the word out that they need antibiotics and other meds...and the money for them.
