President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Classic case of GroupThink. Would you voluntarily build or invest in a property below sea level, close to a hurricane-ridden Gulf, surrounded by a huge lake and the continent's largest river, both of which were at a higher elevation that your hypothetical property.

As an individual, you would run from that deal as fast as you could... but invest in New Orleans?? It has survived for x-hundred years, they have pumps, everyone else is not afraid, etc. Sure, why not (many people say)

Actually, it's not. They have to leave Virginia, go AROUND Florida and into the Gulf. Also, some of those ships were at Japan, and the others took almost a week to arrive.

And apparently neither one of them realize that 60 percent of the LA National Guard are STILL in the state.

And have you noticed that in all these questions, nobody EVER says "Why don't these people just obey the laws?" It's like, "Well, you should have expected these poor (stupid) people not to pay attention to your orders."

... short of building something like they have in the Netherlands, this is doomed to happen again eventually. This is a sinking city. They should save what is on high ground, build a double or triple wall to protect it and then let the remainder go back to wetlands.

I agree that the site should be abandoned. Was describing my idea of how to most quiclky drain it, and not making a judgement regarding the wisdom of re-occupation/

To highlight your point the Mayor has ordered the police to stop looking for survivors and restore law and order. That's a tough decision as jeffe pointed out earlier, and one I wouldn't want to have to make

Yeah, well I wouldn't want to make it either, but I would order looters who were stealing nonessentials shot. Period. Then at least they wouldn't have gotten ahold of so many weapons. That's the only way they are going to be able to restore order; the local and state laws went down with the flood and higher laws have taken over.

Now how are they going to get those weapons away from them? They are probably holed up in hidey holes and will take hostages, and more lives will end up being lost than if they had shot the ones who started stealing non-essentials. The h**l with using it for bartering for essentials. Food and water are on the way and they know it. There are plenty of canned goods in empty homes. They don't need to be robbing people at gunpoint in their own homes and hospitals.

They need to order everybody on guarded busses or however they can get everybody out, try to find those still trapped alive, and then do a search and destroy of what is left, as in free fire zone. This is war.

And they are stupid to rebuild that place. Pouring all that money into WHAT? This should be a good object lesson for the rest of the country. If not a hurricane, something else could happen to any American city.

There's a brand new prison sitting in Thompson, Illinois. I don't know why it's just sitting there empty. Heaven knows there are plenty of criminals in Illinois. Somebody suggested putting people up in there. There're other places to put up people. Put the CRIMINALS in there, the ones who are sitting on the overpass. Just boat them right up the Mississippi and a short ride to the prison.

I used to be against guns, but a LIBERAL convinced me why that would be a bad idea to confiscate them. Then only the criminals and police would have any weapons. Instant 180 and haven't looked back.

You think the superdome could handle 200,000 people? Even if they all did CASH in on their FREE bus ride to the Dome.

I chuckled when that was the best plan the mayor could come up with. New Orleans knew this was possible. You have barges set up. You set up a method of getting those people out and away. No one did. Their plan came down to free bus service to the Dome.

why they couldn't have used trains to move people to a safer region, prior to the hurricane.

It has (by me) and so of course I think it's a good idea. This disaster showed, finally, the difficulties with getting a large number of people out of a city efficiently and quickly. I think major city disaster plans are going to have to deal with this lesson, and I think trains will play into it. The trains could also be loaded with pre-positioned containers of food, equipment, and shelter.

When I lived in Memphis, I remember hearing that something like 80% of the people were on public assistance. I believe they said (then) that it was the highest percentage in the nation.
