President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

What I read, I think on CNN, is that the people at the hotel pooled their money together and the hotel called up some busses. Then FEMA put the kabosh on it, took their busses, and told people to go to the Dome to get on one of those busses.

I'm not being cynical. I'm a very realistic, independent rational thinking person. In disasters, Americans have always helped Americans, and Americans have helped the world. And yes, Americans have opened their homes to help the people of Louisiana, and Mississippi. But, have you heard of any immediate help coming from any foreign countries? Are ships, equipment, medicines, food, or people on the way, or have any airplanes landed with help? Your answer has to be no. We shouldn't have to beg or ask, help should come automatically. If that's cynical thinking, then I guess, I'm cynical.

Hey Howlin,

The good thing, so to speak, is that the people in NO can't see the MSM reports.

I did hear a CNN reporter earlier who was giving the Lt. Gov heck for saying that these people should have gotten out.

In a sense, she said, that's true, but what was your state's plan to get them out ahead of a hurricane...the ones that had no way to get out.

She also mentioned that the Feds had given huge amounts of money to cities to develop evacuation plans and emergency plans in case of a terror attack, and she wondered why NO is so ill-prepared. She was laying the blame on local government, mostly at the State Level.

P.S. Living in a place where we have hurricanes and where the possibility of escape routes being needed might happen, we have Evacuation Rt. signs all over the city.

I read the other day that people (tourists and those unfamiliar with the city) didn't know how to find their way in NO. In a city prone to flooding, you would have thought they'd also have the Evac Rt. signs clearly posted (our Evac signs are posted on roads that will probably not flood, since our county is very prone to storm surge too, and many places would be cut off if that happened.) I'm assuming that's part of our HD plan too.

Isn't Shep at the Superdome?

He's on the great highway overpass in the sky. A Doc just told him that the dead bodies he's been whining about all day pose no immediate public health threat. He was speechless for a moment. He is hysterical in his Shep kinda way.

Norm, I completely understand your frustration with them but I wouldn't walk out of NO under "normal" circumstances. There's no civilization for a long way. Of course, I guess they could at least get a drink out of a swamp then, so maybe walking isn't such a bad idea.

some of NOLA won't get rebuilt.
People will not wait 6 months to start to build another house. Some of those with skills will move their family, find a job.
It's an individual decision.

People need to remember this is Thursday.
The storm hit Monday, the devastation actually began to become clear on Tuesday.

There is no miracle solution.
Trucks are coming with food, water, clothing, and supplies.
Right now the anarchy of the few thugs that don't seem to want the rescuers to actually be allowed to do their work is the biggest deterrant to relief.

By the end of this American companies will have donated supplies and aid totalling half a billion or more. Count on it.

Thousands and thousands of volunteers from SAR crews to ARC workers to church volunteers are converging as we speak. FEMA and various NG elements are working night and day. What they need is our support and prayers, and they need to people of NOLA to help them not fight them in their relief efforts.
