President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

***probably just a crazy idea..***
LOL!! One month into a Detroit winter, they'll be back in NO living under a bridge!!!
Yeah I am getting the feeling some on here think that all those left behind in NO and any Fox reporters deserve what they get now.
I wonder sometimes how these people with such views like this survive on their own without dying of stupidity.
"i think every major city in the US is only 24 hours away from third world anarchy...
and only our careful disregard of this fact allows us to continue on with our daily lives."
I was saying just about the exact same thing to a friend tonight.
Do you think many others actually realize this too? Maybe....
How do you know he is stoned? He might just be sleep deprived. Many peole get to looking like that on very little sleep. People, don't be so critical of our refugees. You are making judgements on people you have no business making judgements about.
Hopefully Sheriff Harry Lee( http://www.jpso.com/lee.htm ) keeps things under control like he normally does. Let me know if you hear anything about Slidell. I've only seen slight mentions of "devastation" and then silence. Our Slidell family here is amazingly composed although the children have cried when watching TV wondering what happened to their home. We remind them that they're safe, alive, and loved...and that is more important than "stuff".
I also didn't believe a thing the guy had to say. It seemed like he was making it up as he went along with the leading questions.
How high's the water, mama?
Five feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Five feet high and risin'
Well, the rails are washed out north of town
We gotta head for higher ground
We can't come back till the water comes down,
Five feet high and risin'
Well, it's five feet high and risin'
What do you mean by loose lips... not like any of them will be reading the Free Republic... now you have us all hooked.....
I am not even a huge Art Bell fan... but his coverage this weekend pre- and almost during- Katrina was excellent.
What places? There is a mandatory evac order in place. They have to go somewhere! No one is taking anyones place.
I remember years ago when we had to make a family trip to Boston. We were so tired and hungry and from the highway we could see a HoJo's was open. We drove and drove trying to figure out how to get there. None of the exits seemed to take us there, even though we could see it clearly from the highway. Sometimes things aren't as simple as they seem - especially if people are exhausted, dehydrated, hungry.
Perhaps because someone in a position to know contacted someone at FR and said it was bunk? Just a guess.
Mr. Hall, I can quote scripture with you all day long.
Nobody here is discriminating against the poor. I have been poor. This is not about race. This is about dishonorable, sinful behavior. If you want to quote scripture, look up a few passages about thievery. Have you considered that if, indeed, that bus was hijacked, that the thugs who did it probably deprived truly poor and law-abiding people of the transportation they needed to get out of New Orleans?
The meek shall, indeed, inherit the earth. Thieves and looters and thugs and hijackers are not among the meek.
sweet lord, now they're stealing the generators at the hospitals and the hospitals have to stop evacuating patients due to threats against their drivers...
WTF is wrong with New Orleans?
We got some hard-hearted hannas here or WHAT?
where are you hearing this?
I don't think any of us have trashed anyone for being poor or black. I just think we dont' have patience with theft and murder,
i think im done here, im pretty much a lurker on the political side, a conservative who comes by to post some info on hurricanes from time to time.
the partisan foolishness in a disaster followed by racist comments and assumptions about the most desperate people you can imagine while sitting in your nice warm house is nearly disgusting considering the circumstances.
ive for fun from time to time browsed DUmmie land in situations and left sick.....i nearly feel the same way here now.
its sad
"I'm gonna go out on a limb and call you a racist Mofo."
And you, my friend, are clearly an idiot.
(But you gave me my first chuckle of the day.)
I tuned in to one of those group pressers I guess yesterday morning, and saw her weeping and saying that all we can do now is pray. I heard her talking in that bland, helpless voice. I saw Landrieu feeding her lines.
I did not know until much later that THAT had been the GOVERNOR of LA. I was shocked. Not a great example of leadership. I had assumed that was the head of a local relief agency or something.
