President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

"I think you are flailing trying to find some rational for your Shep Hating."

You need to look at a map. The place the folks were walking out of the water was the ramp at exit 235 on I-10. The Superdome is less than 1/2 a mile away. The Salvation Army set up a large rescue center under I-10 at the Superdome. I don't have to flail because the facts are on my side. And I don't hate Shep. I just with he'd report the whole picture and not try to create the story.

"I mean, if they drive to Ohio, are we to shelter them?"

No, I don't think it's FEMA's responsibility to shelter refugees everywhere (although I certainly hope private entities and charities would step up to the plate where needed) -- but this, to me, seemed senseless. Here was a person who was at a place actually *set up* to handle refugees, but because he'd been relatively responsible and left New Orleans on his own, he was being turned away, while those who had stayed in New Orleans were being accommodated.

I also question the fact that after the Astrodome was named as the next step in the evacuation plan, this problem (refugees showing up on their own) should have been anticipated and addressed. In this age of computers, etc., surely someone could have printed up sheets of shelter names and addresses (that were actually taking people in) and passed them out, or *something*?

JMHO.

"Maybe the problem is that we have too many politicians running the country and not enough leaders."

You are right! Huge problem for our country-- and might lead to a downfall if not stopped.

This reporter interviewing this poor guy (CNN) should respect someone who is totally stressed out.

I agree that it doesn't make sense to build below sea level, and that is the first thing that NO needs to do. They need to raise the city. It's been done in Galveston, Sacramento, and someone else said Chicago.

I still wouldn't put housing in a lot of NO. There's a lot of skyscrapers and hotels in the downtown area. They could keep those areas down there.

The other thing is that in Texas on the coast the houses are all built on stilts to help with flood waters. They could do the same to housing in that area.

If other Houston shelters are actually open and taking people in, it would be great if someone would take the step to print out lists of addresses -- even Map Quests from the Astrodome since the refugees are from out of town -- and get that information out to the people who are being turned away. This problem -- refugees showing up at the Astrodome under their own power -- should have been anticipated and addressed the minute the Astrodome was named as the next staging center.

I know there is an element of 20/20 hindsight and the problems are overwhelming to say the least, but there are some very basic, commonsense things that people seem to be overlooking.

I just watched that... I almost thought the guy was even referring to the looting when he said I;ve been doing what I had to do to survive??? Even before they said they wondered who these people really were I got very suspicious from that interview.

Really feel for the children because they had no choice on evacuation -- they depended on their parents.

Honestly believe some folks stayed because they had looting planned all along but believe they are in the distinct minority of folks needing help. Looters of guns, etc., can drown for all I care.

Elderly, children, and a lot of folks that thought this was a false alarm since so many hurricanes had passed by need help now. Whether poor or well off, they are in the same boat now with no home to return to in the city.

I wondered why they came on a school bus....with a 20 year old driver. Greyhound is transporting the refugees from the dome....

Superdome. This seem deliberate.

Individual lawyers the law firms that control NOLA, whom represent the monied interests of NOLA, that provided legal counsel to the politicians of LA and NO, made deliberate, calculated decisions on Friday night and Saturday morning, to let the poor populace suffer what may come. Nothing will ever come of it.
