President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
How are folks getting this information?...No electricity....WOnder if that area include the looters.....
WOnder if that area is where the looters are located?
It sounds to me as if patching this levee if fruitless. If they do get it patched and start pumping out the water on one side then it will give out somewhere else. The levee was battered...It is weak. While the preasure is equalized they need to start over. That is if they plan to rebuild NO.
I think I would've stayed on the roof with my dog. I know humans are the priority, but how can you leave your best friend behind? Sickening.
WOW, some expert guy on the Larry King Replay says that in the NO area there is an estimated 250K still stranded.
That is going to take way more effort to remedy than first thought!
By the time Nawlins COULD be rebuilt most dislocated people will have been assimilated into the cities they fled to.
good pointed questions about who will rebuild N.O.
I do agree with you that it is highly, very highly, likely that N.O. is finished as a major American city, at least for this century.
Thanks for your prayers.
And prayers for your nephew.
I sure hope you're not a real pastor.
"Arizona Carolyn wrote: What makes you think he's gay?"
I hear they can easily identify each other. Then again, how would I know.
Wasn't that the same report from yesterday?
OMG...did this just happen?
I wondered about that? Would all that water on top of the ground make it sink further?
"There are picture of others carrying out their pets....Wonder why he wasn't allowed to bring his."
Might have been a helicopter rescue, or even a boat that needed the space to save humans. That's different from people carrying their pets out.
Heartbreaking decisions, but I'd rather them leave a dog behind than give it a seat that a child or a granny needs.
We raise the level of New Orleans, we make much stronger levees, and rebuild some of the areas like the French Quarter and downtown.
Some of the poorer housing areas get demolished and moved to higher ground. Turn those areas into some type of park.
Mainly try to keep the businesses in the low areas, and the housing in higher areas.
Does that make sense.
All the unlicensed contractors in CA will head that way. FEMA money is the best, since it is prepaid.
"The only mistake GW made during this was that he did not publicize what a bunch of incompetent idiots were running the state of Louisiana, and the city of NO"
That is not his direct domestic-politics MO, ever, from what I can tell. However, if unrelated third parties start bringing this up I wouldn't be surprised.
