President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Probably depends on whoever is doing the saving, I guess... I think it's terrible if they are there not to bring the dog, too.

We need a debate,,,do we rebuild NO or do we let it go?

It's not a matter of "should we or shouldn't we." It's a matter of "can we or can't we."

As others have pointed out, the city will be uninhabitable for months (my best guess is at least eight months). After that, how many people will return, since they will likely have established themselves elsewhere? How many will rebuild their homes? How many small businesses will try it again? How many national chains will want to rebuild? How many insurance companies will want to insure them if they do?

New Orleans is finished as a major American city, IMHO.

This is Holy Trinity Cathedral. It has existed as a Greek Orthodox Parish for over 140 years. The address is 1200 R.E. Lee Blvd. New Orleans LA 70122. It is located at the corner of Robert E. Lee Boulevard and St. Bernard Avenue, near City Park.

Does anyone know how bad the flooding is there? Any constructive information is appreciated.

a map to futher help anyone who might have information:

Whats killing me is the kids. Mothers having to watch their dehydrated children dying. It breaks my heart.

To me there should be a concentrated effort on rescuing children and their parents above all else.

"The levee is waterlogged and likely to continue failing throughout."
--->

I strongly suspect that is true. It's not the first time I've heard the suggestion. We'll know the truth of this within a week or so, I suspect.

'nite all, now.

But not everyone who is a refugee is a scumbag.

True. Some of the heartlessness I have read on this thread and others has me shocked. You are so right. These people for the most part are poor and tried to get out. New Orleans has a very good public transit system, I used it when I was young and had no car or money to purchase a car. It would have been difficult for me to have gotten out of the City if that hurricane had hit in the 1970s instead of this past week. What happened to "There but for the grace of God go I?

I have read the most outlandish things about New Orleans police since that video of two cops looting. Right now my nephew is facing very real looters with guns. Probably drug addicts who can't get their usual fix. I'm sure he has little ammo, not much chain of command, and little help. His mom who just got out of New Orleans is worried sick about him. I sure hope no one on FR ever has to go through what any of the people in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast have had to go through. I doubt some of these windbags could handle it.

"There IS another breech, saw it earlier tonight on Greta's show... about a mile from the 17th street breech. What does this tell us? The levee is waterlogged and likely to continue failing throughout."

Yep.

Now imagine your law enforcement has NO transportation and NO communication network and you have the reality they faced and are facing.

Now... imagine Kathleen Babineaux Blanco is Haley Barbour and is actually working to "save lives" instead of appearing and whining on Larry King.

oh no - I thought the water levels had equalized. Is that only because the pumps have been working?

This sounds like they knew it was imminent, and that's why they rushed the evac today.
