When asked why these young men were not being used to help in the recovery effort, our reporters were told that it would be pointless to send military personnel down to the beach to pick up debris. Apalling. People better get their stuff together down there.

On Wednesday reporters listening to horrific stories of death and survival at the Biloxi Junior High School shelter looked north across Irish Hill Road and saw Air Force personnel playing basketball and performing calisthenics. Playing basketball and performing calisthenics!

FEMA looks totally inept. The director should be fired for not having a plan ready, particularly since he bragged on TV on Sunday that they had a week-long conference on New Orleans last year. Like all bureaucrats, he confused having a conference with actually doing something.

I wonder if they are misunderstanding the actions of the Airmen. This reads like these guys are doing nothing else during the day than goofing off. I'd read that Keesler AF Base sustained heavy damage to some of the industrial parts of the base and some of the housing, and that parts of it were still under water the day after the storm. If there was damage there, the Airmen would have been working to clear it up. Maybe the men they saw had finished their shifts at the base and were on their off time. Everyone gets off time, even the people working on storm clean up.
The National Guard is working doing clean up and rescue. We may not see it on the TV, and the Sun Herald may not see it, but somebody is picking up those bodies and moving debris around in the Back Bay area.
The Sun Herald can be as snarky as they want about the authorities not releasing the numbers of the dead, but truly, what would that serve except to pique people's curiousity at this point?

Sounds like outside of NO it is just your garden variety hurricane aftermath cleanup.
Hmm, no looting, raping or shooting. There is another thing different about these pictures...
