Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.
Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.

No Children's Hospital Looting 4:35 p.m.
Doug Mittelstaedt, vice-president of Human Resources for Children's Hospital in New Orleans, said one of the biggest issues at the hospital on Wednesday was debunking the prevalent rumor that looters had stormed the hospital.
Mittelstaedt said things actually were operating smoothly at the hospital - the generator was running efficiently and efforts to relocate patients were going well - but fighting the rumor was a major issue.
Officials had to lock the doors of the hospital because people had arrived, apparently thinking there was a mob scene and they could get in on looting.
He said the hospital has been flooded with calls offering assistance from other Children's Hospitals in Louisiana and Texas. "The amount of calls we have gotten for support have been overwhelming," Mittelstaedt said. "The phones literally have been ringing off the hook."
With so many calls, Mittelstaedt said officials have been able to match up the 100 patients with hospitals that specialize in the particular treatments for each.
bttt
If the threat grows the hospital might just have to put its narcotics outside and tell them to take 'em and leave. Any other consideration has to be secondary to keeping the children safe.
Exactly. How shameful is it to threaten a children's hospital now?
These looters are worse than wild animals; they're subhuman.
OK...looters breaking into the Winn-Dixie and the Walgreens, that I can understand. But a CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL????
Let the whole stinkin' place sink into the mud....after rescuing these children, of course...
They had better get the Guard, the Marines, the Navy SEALs in their pronto...the NOPD was alwasy a worthless institution anyway, this only confirms it.
No, and after watching this unfold all day I'm questioning whether I even have enough firepower.
I'm as perplexed as you all as to why the NG can't go where looters can. Hell, put a freakin' john boat or two in the water and let 'em go in armed and disperse the thing.
Something here doesn't smell right. Why would anyone want to loot a hospital? Kinda hard to do with all those people around. Doctors and nurses and other staff.
And it certainly doesn't encourage anyone to want to go down and help.
What's maddening is that the responsible people that the thieves and rioters want to steal from and harm, are the very people who would provide the help and rescue if they could.
Why isn't the Governor demanding marshal law down there? The low life creeps and criminals are in a state of anarchy. They're just robbing and stealing everything. What a pathetic bunch of losers!
They're after drugs, no doubt.
That's looking like less and less of a problem.
Over the years I've heard many, many bad things about the NOPD. And I live about 1500 miles from NO.
Wasn't there a corruption scandal in the NOPD about five years ago that resulted in the death of a cop? FBI got involved? What ever became of that?
This Children's Hospital situation might be a good excuse to get the feds involved. Do they have to wait for the governor to ask? Maybe she could take a break for a few minutes from being on television and see to it.
(steely)
Drugs!
I don't get this. The looters have no problem getting to the hospital, but the National Guard can't?
Simple....DRUGS
The post hurricane looting is a great advertisement for the NRA. I wonder if many stayed behind primarily in order to loot.
Start dropping boxes of Nike Air Penny shoes a few miles from the hospital. That'll drive the freaks nuts and draw them off from the hospital.
If true, shoot them dead.
I'd think the looters would get in if they wanted to.
