Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.

Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.

No Children's Hospital Looting 4:35 p.m.

Doug Mittelstaedt, vice-president of Human Resources for Children's Hospital in New Orleans, said one of the biggest issues at the hospital on Wednesday was debunking the prevalent rumor that looters had stormed the hospital.

Mittelstaedt said things actually were operating smoothly at the hospital - the generator was running efficiently and efforts to relocate patients were going well - but fighting the rumor was a major issue.

Officials had to lock the doors of the hospital because people had arrived, apparently thinking there was a mob scene and they could get in on looting.

He said the hospital has been flooded with calls offering assistance from other Children's Hospitals in Louisiana and Texas. "The amount of calls we have gotten for support have been overwhelming," Mittelstaedt said. "The phones literally have been ringing off the hook."

With so many calls, Mittelstaedt said officials have been able to match up the 100 patients with hospitals that specialize in the particular treatments for each.

Never underestimate a protective healthcare worker, they'll do anything to protect patients, especially when it comes to peeds.

If the entire citizenry were armed there would be no problems. I wonder if the hospital is a gun free zone complete with signage? Hell, even ONE gun probably would've solved the entire situation.

Why would anyone want to loot a hospital?

Narcotics.

Looters? Dope fiends? Or rapists?

Law stands for nothing these days except "revenue enhancement".

Why would you want to loot a children's hospital? These undocumented shoppers wouldn't normally hit that kind of target.

Is there marshal law? Will they be shot on sight? Should they be? They *must* be prosecuted. At least those who are caught on roving reporter's cameras.

One helicopter hovers overhead. A loudspeaker announces, "You have 30 seconds to leave the hospital area or you will be shot."

Shoot anyone who does not comply.

Problem solved.

These people are looting because there are absolutely no consequences to them for doing it.

What do you mean by "undocumented?" 99% of the looters are American citizens my friend.

Yeah, but then we would end up supplying them with room and board for forever.

Shame, shame. It should be "alleged looters", not "looters".

Please..someone tell me what the news is saying about this. I'm away from home with no cable and a stinking crazy slow wireless connection tonight.

I also work in Peds and this is horrifying me.

If the looters can move around, why can't the NO police department?

The NG is support, not primary.

Shame on Nagin and Blanco.

Yeah, how do they know they are "looters"? Are these people standing outside yelling, "let us in so we can LOOT your building"? Maybe they are seeking shelter, there is literally nowhere to go - even the "shelters" are being evacuated. Why is everyone outside automatically a "looter"?

BTW, thw NG can definitely mobilize in 24 hours, much less than that if need be. I can remember several instances when my ex left our bed to go on duty at odd hours during bad weather, as the hurricanes/floods were happening. The whole situation in NO appears absolutely dreadful.
