Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.
Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.

No Children's Hospital Looting 4:35 p.m.
Doug Mittelstaedt, vice-president of Human Resources for Children's Hospital in New Orleans, said one of the biggest issues at the hospital on Wednesday was debunking the prevalent rumor that looters had stormed the hospital.
Mittelstaedt said things actually were operating smoothly at the hospital - the generator was running efficiently and efforts to relocate patients were going well - but fighting the rumor was a major issue.
Officials had to lock the doors of the hospital because people had arrived, apparently thinking there was a mob scene and they could get in on looting.
He said the hospital has been flooded with calls offering assistance from other Children's Hospitals in Louisiana and Texas. "The amount of calls we have gotten for support have been overwhelming," Mittelstaedt said. "The phones literally have been ringing off the hook."
With so many calls, Mittelstaedt said officials have been able to match up the 100 patients with hospitals that specialize in the particular treatments for each.
" The real crisis is only 24 hours old and it is impossible to mobilize that quickly."
Didn't they know far in advance that SOMEthing was going to happen, if not exactly where and how much??
It's certainly a stark contrast between Blanco and Barbour. She sounds wishy washy and mystified every time I hear her. Barbour, on the other hand, gave an impression of calm confidence and a man with a plan.
I used to go there sometimes, but now I try to stay away. They're mad, truly 'round the bend. There's nothing to be learned there.
That they are trashing W is no surprise, and means nothing. They were trashing him before this, and they'll keep trashing him afterward.
What I mean is that the chaos and mayhem into which New Orleans has descended is far more disturbing than the damage from the hurricane (I'm on thin ice saying this, having not watched any TV coverage; I'm following this on FreeRepublic only).
Average people will react with disgust to the looting and lawlessness. Those who shout that it's all Bush's fault may as well p*ss up a rope. No one will pay them any heed (except for the already mad left).
(steely)
People seem to think that the NG is an "on-duty" force that is available for immediate mobilization but that is not the case. The vast majority must be called up from their everyday lives and activated. Given the scope of this disaster one can safely assume that hundreds or even thousands are among those that evacuated the region along with everyone else.
CNN reports that the NO mayor says NO is "relatively safe".
The lowest of the low "looters" never cease to amaze me on what scum they can be. I say shoot to kill if caught looting. Just my two cents

You aren't familiar with NO are you?
Don your flame suit.
No, better yet, put on some diamond-scale armor. Some Freepers who favor execution-style solutions will flame you for that statement.
Have never heard the numbers before... thank you. That's good. I agree it doesn't seem people understand basic values anymore - I'm an "old-fashioned" girl it seems...
I feel the same way about the guns. There is a purpose for having the supplies and tools you need to defend and protect yourself and your family.
The police are only really there to help AFTER a crime has been committed, they are not there to protect us, and depend on them for our survival - we still have to take care of ourselves that's for sure.
A little off topic but.....
There are some people/families that really need welfare. My family is one of them. I am unable to work for various reasons that I choose not to disclose here.
For the record I do not think looting is ok..............with the exception of getting supplies needed for survival..ie food water.
"The hospitals need to hand over the Methadone and Xanax and be sure to tell everyone to take them both together for the best results. They'll all drop dead before morning."
ROTFLMAO!
Mississippi had no discernable problem getting its NG into place and ready to move in, even though half the state is without power.
LOL, I'll file that with a quote from Jackson Mississippi's former police chief who said there were no gangs in Jackson, only young men bound together by criminal activity.
He would maybe prefer martial law?
And where is PETA when you need them? (end/sarcasm)
They have a different governor.
If all the jerks who took advantage of welfare would be sent to work, it would leave more for people who truly needed it and there wouldn't be such a backlash for those who need help... IMHO
I think those who are down there and in need of food should at least make an effort to be organized about it, and at least get permission or something from an official to orderly pass out food and needed supplies from the stores - whatever is salvagable should be made available to help those who need it. Maybe this is impossible given the situation...
As far as food and water being taken - it's a close call as to whether I would consider it looting or survival. I know it would be tempting had I no choice and not near an area where FEMA could reach at this point...
