Weber sat among hundreds of refugees rescued Tuesday from rooftops, attics and floating debris in the 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish by an armada of more than 100 boats. Officials from the Coast Guard estimated they pulled thousands of people off of rooftops and attics, many with stories as grim as Webers. Officials believed hundreds and maybe thousands more remained in peril. They declined to estimate the number of dead. That will come later.

Then, in an evening press conference, Mayor Ray Nagin announced that the already crippled city would take yet another blow: Another surge of water from the failed 17th Street Canal levee that could push an additional 10 feet of water into already waterlogged neighborhoods and possibly flood the remaining dry sections of Uptown.

Uptown resident Keith Williams started his own security patrol, driving around in his Ford pickup with his newly purchased handgun. Earlier in the day, Williams said he had seen the body of a gunshot victim near the corner of Leonidas and Hickory streets.
"What I want to know is why we dont have paratroopers with machine guns on every street," Williams said.
Like-minded Art Depodesta sat on the edge of a picnic table outside Cooter Browns Bar, a chrome shotgun at his side loaded with red shells.
"They broke into the Shell station across the street," he said. "I walked over with my 12-gauge and shot a couple into the air."
The looters scattered, but soon after, another man appeared outside the bar in a pickup truck armed with a pistol and threatened Depodesta.
"I told him, Listen, I was in the Army and I will blow your ass off," Depodesta said. "Weve got enough trouble with the flood."

Sharks could eat looters.
That is what is literally sending shivers down my spine, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Earthquake or Volcano.
Forgive me Lord, Shoot the Bastards!
I was thinking that, too.
Forgive me Lord, Shoot the Bastards!
This is a total SNAFU and it IS Bush's fault. Where are the paratroopers indeed? It's the Governors of the states fault as well but what we see unfolding now should have been planned for. The government is a fu*cking joke!
Oh, puhlease. There have been great changes in the last 10 years, and there were a lot of terrible changes in the past....not a very bold prediction on your part! LOL!
Don't forget, the Mayans said the end of the 5th age would occur on Dec 24, 2012....so you've got some backers there, anyway!
Yeah, escape routes, that's it... I'll just get off the Earth and go somewhere else.
I hope he takes a "bite out of crime"...as in a looter.
Who cares about the looting, the whole city is going to be destroyed by the flooding. The least of their worries is the looting.
That has been the problem right along with all aspects of this mess--no plans!
On one of talking head shows tonight I heard that the levee with the 300 foot breach was new--it had just been completed within the last year. It no doubt opened to much fanfare and self congratulations on the part of the pols.
The common sarcastic reply on any give thread is always "it's Bush's fault"
I take it you are not being sarcastic.
Someone we know asked why didn't the Govt. bring in those huge Cargo planes that have tons of area to pack people in and fly folks out before hand.
LOL! Yes. It was media it was after though.
LOL Maybe we could take that elevator that some company wants to build to the moon.
That sounds like a plan to me! They are behaving like anarchists.
Yeah but the Childrens Hospital that is just lower than a snake.
I have old ties to Childrens Hospitals and have spent months at a time in them. I cannot fathom the thought of someone looting a place where sick babies are and some fighting for their lives as it is.
Shoot the Bastards!
I had the same thought.
"The idea that cops were looting is a sin, just a sin."
I read that some emergency services personnel were confiscating food, warm cloting, and simple medical supplies out of stores to distribute them to those in need. I hope the stories of Police looting turn out to be cases like that.
"I hope the stories of Police looting turn out to be cases like that."
Me too.
