City a woeful scene (New Orleans deteriorating further)

City a woeful scene

Tuesday, 10:14 p.m.

[...]

Weber sat among hundreds of refugees rescued Tuesday from rooftops, attics and floating debris in the 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish by an armada of more than 100 boats. Officials from the Coast Guard estimated they pulled thousands of people off of rooftops and attics, many with stories as grim as Weber’s. Officials believed hundreds and maybe thousands more remained in peril. They declined to estimate the number of dead. That will come later.

[...]

Then, in an evening press conference, Mayor Ray Nagin announced that the already crippled city would take yet another blow: Another surge of water from the failed 17th Street Canal levee that could push an additional 10 feet of water into already waterlogged neighborhoods – and possibly flood the remaining dry sections of Uptown.

[...]

Uptown resident Keith Williams started his own security patrol, driving around in his Ford pickup with his newly purchased handgun. Earlier in the day, Williams said he had seen the body of a gunshot victim near the corner of Leonidas and Hickory streets.

"What I want to know is why we don’t have paratroopers with machine guns on every street," Williams said.

Like-minded Art Depodesta sat on the edge of a picnic table outside Cooter Brown’s Bar, a chrome shotgun at his side loaded with red shells.

"They broke into the Shell station across the street," he said. "I walked over with my 12-gauge and shot a couple into the air."

The looters scattered, but soon after, another man appeared outside the bar in a pickup truck armed with a pistol and threatened Depodesta.

"I told him, ‘Listen, I was in the Army and I will blow your ass off,’" Depodesta said. "We’ve got enough trouble with the flood."

Somebody please tell me whose responsibility it was in New Orleans to order an evacuation of the residents, and why they didn't put these school buses into use - to get people out of the city before the storm hit?

Instead of herding people into the Superdome, why didn't the mayor order the use of these buses, and get those people out of the low-lying areas?

An aerial view shows flooded school buses in New Orleans. Water began rising in the streets Tuesday morning, swamping an estimated 80 percent of the city.

Oh give me a home where the belt-fed's roam, and looters are scared away.....!

Where never is heard a "Gun Control" word, and criminals fear to stay!

Damn I'm glad I live in Nevada right now!
Worst we get is drought and heavy snow, flooding is rare and brief.
Looting and car-jacking just about unheard of, not safe occupation's here.

...these people have been on television and radio all night and the people who need them cannot hear them.

You've nailed it...so often when the eye of the world is on their realm our politicians become camera whores and forget their true responsibility to the citizens.

They need to stay off the airwaves, meet at a command center with FEMA and the Red Cross and get their act together. People are stuck in attics and dying as I type this.

Amen...champion the issue and send the press secretary to the media...

This also solves the little looting problem. The bad seed problem. All of their problems.

Alabama and Mississippi will be on the road to recovery long before Louisiana begins the process. I can already hear the New Orleans mayor, the governor, and Mary Landrieu blame the president for Louisiana failures. They will say Louisiana's problems are bigger than Mississippi or Alabama. they will say Louisiana and New Orleans deserve more assistance, more attention, more money, more federal money faster. They will say the president has shown favortism to states with Republican governors.

WOW! That photo of the buses is so sad when you think of all the people they could have gotten to higher ground.

Is it because people are getting stupid due to drinking themselves into oblivian?

I heard on the news that a couple of guys with AK's came in and shot up a police station then left after there was return fire no injuries.

Then an Officer trying to do his job in stopping looters was shot in the face, he is ok. Must have been a graze.

What the hell is wrong with people?

What a bunch of losers to go off like wild Gorillas.

Kudos to those acting in Brotherly Love and doing the right thing.

Good point. I was thinking of whatever city bus system they had or even semis, whatever it took. It would've kept those busses from being ruined, as well.

Sometimes when there is a big disaster, folks will say it's almost biblical or almost apocalyptic. This is both biblical and apocalyptic.

[Off Topic rebuttal alert]
According to Glatzmaier, the ongoing 10% decline doesn't mean that a reversal is imminent. "The field is increasing or decreasing all the time," he says. "We know this from studies of the paleomagnetic record." Earth's present-day magnetic field is, in fact, much stronger than normal.
