The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

... closure of the entire Mississippi mouth for ALL sea-going traffic for significantly longer than the usual post-hurricane period would have a major, major, adverse effect on the U.S. economy.

Yes it will, and it also affects our international business partners. Lots of US production exits for foreign destinations via NOLA, and in many cases, the lack of shipment will prevent the folks in foreign countries from doing their planned business, too.

Houston Astrodome, shelter of last, last resort.

Maybe Texas can annex La. after this.

Things will be bad enough with the Port of New Orleans closed, though other river ports can probably make up for some of it, but closure of the entire Mississippi mouth for ALL sea-going traffic for significantly longer than the usual post-hurricane period would have a major, major, adverse effect on the U.S. economy.

If true, this is where the media is an awful failure. Direct the woman to any hospital in the area, they cannot refuse her treatment; not to mention the free clinics that are in all areas anymore.

And even though that is a rescue chopper, it's not going to get all of that crowd out.

It's now working on picking up a family from a rooftop in an area where the first floors of the houses are flooded.

Just saw three busses from American First Charter w/ police escort getting off Gulf Fwy (I-45). I wonder if this is some of the folks from NOLA.

I guess I'm having trouble understanding that. Most of the flooding we've seen in New Orleans proper has been not even to the first floor of houses, and it's come up (fairly) slowly--slow enough for people to make it to roofs and upper floors, even to shelters like the Superdome by the thousands. We're not talking a thirty-foot water hammer like what scoured Mississippi and St. Bernard and Plaquamines clean. How would hundreds, maybe thousands, die in New Orleans? Is Nagin prone to being melodramatic or is he serious here?

This is incomprehensible. A disaster that's just too big to get one's head around.

I can't believe a smart senator and a congressman don't hold a joint press conference and say they are cutting THEIR vacation short to file legislation for immediate consideration to open ANWR to drilling. Demand a fast track vote and get everyone on record while prices are so high. It is time to think and act like a majority.

This is where the strength of our nation will show. I have suspected from the start that the losses would be substantial. I really do pray I am wrong.

If they have "Evacuation" on the front, they're definitely them. Timeline would be pretty close to right if they hustled.
