The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I heard German and Japan offering help. And Venezuela, subject to conditions. I would think other countries might once it's clearer what the specific needs are. "Everything" doesn't really pinpoint it.

Thanks for the alert on the President's speaking at 5. (4 my time). I will be at my son's house to watch the kids when they get off the bus, but I will commandeer the television. Age sometimes can pull rank, you know.

Blanco convinced Cuban officials to purchase $15 million worth of agricultural products from the Bayou state. Blanco's ability to bring home the goods was widely applauded by Louisiana natives, including state Sen. Robert Barham, a farmer and Republican who joined the trade mission.

So Blanco made a deal with the Devil...hmmm?

Here's the speech you were looking for last night.

The president has given the locals every chance to act. Every time they have not he has stepped up. Looks like he's getting tired of the innaction. I am quite impressed with him on this.

Sometime, long after the clean-up, but before rebuilding, an analysis needs to be made about building codes and evaluate if certain types of buildings or building codes fared better than others.

I know that our county adopted the Miami/Dade code, supposedly one of the most stringent in the nation, but even with that, the Miami/Dade code has not been tested by a major hurricane (at least, not that I know of.)

Those prisoners are usually resourceful and some will find a way out and head to where we live

Just clicked on CNN in time to hear the reporterette sneer that GW had just flown over parts of Mississippi and NO, and spent (all of), 35 minutes inspecting the damage. Oh, and that he'll speak to the nation at five P.M. Unbelievable bias. What did they want him to do? Pick up a gun and shoot looters? Roll up his sleeves and bail out NO singlehanded? The truth is, there's nothing he could have done that would satisfy this crowd. The fact that he took time to get sensible plans from Michael Chertoff and others in the cabinet to evacuate, clothe, feed, and house thousands means nothing. The fact that he declared Mississippi and Louisiana disaster areas before their govs did means nothing. Halfwits.

By the time these bodies are recovered, they are going to be filled with tissue-gas; some may have already ruptured.

These bacteria are highly toxic, and require decontamination of anything they contact.

Burial will be impossible in New Orleans proper. Indeed, a formal burial of any kind will likely be impossible. Storing these bodies in refrigerated trucks may be possible, but if there is a cholera outbreak, the state health commissioner may order a mass burial somewhere upstate.

We've never seen anything like this before in the United States.

The early models seems to have it pointed towards the Gulf. Way too early to hit the panic button, of course.

So Blanco made a deal with the Devil...

Those are often easy deals to make. Payback may be a problem later.

NBC news special report - significant development - impromptu news conference Mayor Nagin said "we know there is a significna tnumber of dead bodies in the water. A minimum of 100, likely 1,000s when we count the dead bodies in the attic."

Absolutely Amazing, and utterly inexcusable.....

New Orleans Administrators have screwed this up FROM THE START!

How many have died because of these peoples actions?

Nationalize New Orleans NOW!

Here's a dumb question:

If a mandatory evacuation was ordered...why were there still prisoners in the jails? Why was there anyone even there to guard them. There should have been means to get them out to more secure "accomodations" last week.

Just another question for Homeland Security type departments. This disaster gives us a "model" to work from, to think of every aspect of the problem.

They are showing a very heartening clip of rescued people on WWL's stream. It's good to see big smiles on children's faces.
