The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Ok now for those jumping on Howlin about the PA system stuff I think you should also realize that most PA systems are set up where u can disconnect speakers and amplifiers. It would take less electricity to speak over the PA system then it does to run 1 of the lights if they break it down to just one speaker facing the area where the ppl are sitting at.

Now flame me if ya want for it...

We've gotten sidetracked on the PA system (wonder why.......LOL), but the entire point is that they aren't bothering to tell the people inside what is going on or what is going to happen to them. They are totally clueless as to what is going on outside those walls.

I am just saying that the people need to look up the definition of catastrophic. Thats what we are dealing with here. Alot was theory now its reality I just dont see how other govts with the unique circumstances esp dealing with geology and economics could have done much better

What's next, containment areas under the interstates?

I heard them ask earlier on CNN for everyone to call with ideas...maybe you should call it in!

Some lady called in with the idea about cruise ships that's been floating around here for days. The Governor and some other official (sorry, can't keep them straight anymore) seized upon it as a brilliant idea, and asked for citizens to contact them with more!

For years, I've heard the Red Cross, FEMA, and other agencies talk about the fact that a hit on NO by a hurricane would be the ultimate natural disaster in the U.S. Apparently, they spent a whole lot of time talking, and.....

(except when it seems the waters will go ten feet above for mysterious reasons, that no one has bothered to explain).

It's been explained to you countless times but that won't make you accept it. Water levels don't count when you add "flow" to the equation. At some point an engineer will hammer this out and you might get it but being a lawyer and contrary by nature that's not absolute.

The evac was folks getting into their cars and driving away, and a late contraflow. How heroic.

Yeah I know Howlin it's idiotic to say the least but as for the PA system thing I figured I'd put in my 2 cents before it got worse.

Oh, I see; Instead of group therapy, they can have group disaster?

FGS, that's insane. Can a "task force" be far behind?

I think that its being communicated thats its a disaster out there. Now as to question there hearing when can I go home. There's no answer to that. To the question whats next. The answer is its being worked out but you want be abandoned. That is being communicated to them by the guard and red cross officials as well as local officials

Granted I am obtuse, with poor reading comprehension and reasoning skills, but I will "get it" when someone confirms the lake is ten feet above sea level, rather than 9 inches, or 3 feet, or 4 feet, take your pick, like advertised this afternoon, and will gain another five feet in over the evening, and explains why.

Just like you.

That's where you're wrong. You won't even listen to people who LIVE in New Orleans or LA. You're "learnin' as you go," just as I see you do in almost every news discussion on this site. Geez, there's nothing wrong with having an opinion, but sometimes it pays to step back and say "okay maybe everything I've seen or read in the last TWO DAYS (or whatever) might not give me the fullest picture to tell everybody exactly how things are, and should be."

I'm not from New Orleans, but I did take an intern job and live there for a summer, and have made a point to go back and visit as often as possible - and during that summer I took it upon myself to learn as much about the history and the societal situation (good to know - cause NOLA can be a rough place if you find yourself in the wrong part of town) as possible.

My friend's family has been in the Louisiana political system for generations. From what he tells me, it's amazing they've managed as well as they have. There is corruption, poverty, cultural problems that have continually plagued the entire state, and New Orleans is a nexus of that. They can barely pay their police officers or teachers, much less put in place a catastrophic hurricane plan. For years, they've just been lucky. The luck ran out. Blame anyone you want, but in the end, it's just a sad disaster.

Now I really will try to go to bed, but if you keep posting to me, and toss insults my way, I will be hard-pressed not to respond.

-Out

Here's why: the lake level may or may not be higher but the bigger question is where is the water going? If you answer in to one of the bowls you might be getting it.

Get it?

No it wasnt. You see most people just see the New orleans picture and dont see the whole scope. I was involved in the evac in the late ninties it was a disaster. The problem was every one in all the parishes left at the same time. What happened and what happened here was that diff parishes were given mandatory evac at diff times partly as to not create gridlock on the roads. That happened here. Also there was no such thing as contra flow when I evaced and according to most editorials in local newspapers they appaluded how it went this time. YOu also dont flood the roadways without having the necessary law enforecemt, aid station ,and roadside assistance available. Plus the number of shelters you have to set up for this relocation is great. At the same time govt handling the safe evac they are having to handle preparations for a disater. See this is my point about understanding the situation. THeres just a reality that intrudes when that many people are moving at the same time. PLus the evacuation of special needs cases plus a hundred other things.
