The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Need more data!
FDOT got the Escambia bridge reopened in a matter of weeks after Ivan passed through. I would imagine this bridge could be reopened much more quickly than most people would think. It will certainly be open to traffic again before there's a city for it to go to.
Of course it's gone. This is a sad and frustrating fact, but we might as well deal with it now and get on with it.
There is not going to be any rebuilding any time soon.
Many of the structures will have to be burnt to the ground, and that can't be done until the water recedes, the roads rebuilt, and the bodies, rats, and debris are cleaned up.
Who will foot those bills, where will people live while they wait, earn their livings, etc? I believe it will take years, if ever, to rebuild.
"You're absolutely right - but what of the generators? They had only less than a day of fuel?"
Yet more incompetence, how the hell would anyone let this happen? There should have been a months fuel available for pumps that were impervious to water, behind levees 30% higher that necessary. But the libs who run the show just want to create more dependence by giving unlimited handouts, rahter than protecting the city as they should. Typical.
Exactly right. Eighty percent of the people in New Orleans got out before the storm. With a population of around a half million, that leaves 100,000 left in the city. If there are 30,000 people in the Superdome, that leaves 70,000 on rooftops or floating in the streets. If half of them survive, 35,000 don't. If 90% of the people left behind survive, that means 7,000 of them don't. And that assumes everyone in the Superdome survive.
There are going to be lawsuits regardless ..
What is important right now is to get those folks to a safer place .. pronto
I think we all need to look at this after the people are out, regarding what not to do. There may come a time when we can't leave and have to defend ourselves and survive. I hope and pray we never have a national emergency but having a plan and being prepared isn't a bad thing.
Bless you and take care.
Well.. that is why God gave me a brain. With pre-warning (not the case with earthquakes) I would have loaded the dogs, coolers, computer (for work) boat and SUV and hit the road last Friday.
What in the name of God is wrong with these people?
Not really.
I documented my assertion with links.

From Drudge:
NAVY SHIPS AND MARITIME RESCUE TEAMS SENT TO REGION
Tue Aug 30 2005 21:33:11 ET
The Pentagon late Tuesday ordered five Navy ships and eight maritime rescue teams to the Gulf Coast to bolster relief operations as worsening conditions overwhelmed the initial response.
The NEW YORK TIMES plans to report later tonight: One Navy amphibious assault ship, the Bataan, with six Sea Stallion and Sea Hawk helicopters that could be used for search and rescue missions.
The ships will carry food, fuel, medical and construction supplies, as well as hovercraft that can be used for evacuation and search-and-rescue missions.
The Navy was also considering sending the hospital ship Comfort.

not looking good.
"Are these two on the same page?"
No.
Did you hear Aaron Brown ask him when New Orleans would be New Orleans again, and he said eight weeks? Eight weeks????????????
I must have heard wrong.
The FNC's lead story at the half hour break has Jessie Jackson supporting Venezuela's Chavez.
The FNC is pathetic.
"Again.. let's not reinvent a plan. let's call in some Miami experts to help.. who is the national expert on hurricane disaster recovery.. don't tell me the Red Cross.. I am talking serious work here..."
Later, perhaps N.O. needs the Dutch and their technology.
I recently visited California, and every time I drove on a bridge, the thought of an earthquake entered my mind.
I believe there are about 60,000 people in the Superdome now.
its got to happen in any case, so the earlier they start, the better. how far do they have to shuttle the people to get them onto the buses? a few miles I guess?
