NEW ORLEANS (AP) With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.
"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

I look at those pictures and I'm not sure if It's New Orleans 2005, or Mogedishu 1993.
Agreed. None of the looters I saw on tv looked like they were supplied with extraordinary intelligence.
I'm reminded of a picture I saw of the food lines created after the San Francisco earthquake and fire at the turn of the century. In the foreground was an Army soldier watching the people in line with a huge Colt Army Model revolver dangling from his hand. There was no disorder in those relief lines.
"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not." ----- Thats like a NY'er acting shocked they never saw a roach or a rat!
Uh... the bulk of the LANG (my brother included) are serving in Iraq at the moment.
You are a racist, and it makes me ashamed to be on the same forum with someone who thinks like you do.
"people who are oppressed all their lives..."
Is this not code for blacks? This dope makes it forgivable for blacks to steal from whites whom they never met. I guess it's retail reparations. The politics of group culpability and group entitlement continues unabated in some parts.
So it is society's fault you were to lazy to do something with your life.
Don't put words in my mouth Biker Chick. It's society's fault that I was (and am) too DRUNK and LAZY. Hey, I don't feel like working. That's how I was born. I can't help not liking work or delayed gratification. Society made the rules that put me at a disadvantage.
I'm oppressed. Can you get out of your own greedy head for one minute and think about how I feel as I lounge on my tax payer bought sofa in my subsidized air conditioning, in my government provided house, watching my Social Security paid for Television and cable, and I see an ad for, oh, Carnival Cruises, and know that I'll probably never get to go on one of those (unless I get lucky and have a medical malpractice suit or slip and fall)? You are a heartless, greedy person.
Owl_Eagle(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
Yeah, man, and especially those teenagers who have been oppressed for fourteen or fifteen years already.
I had that same thought yesterday while the hurricane was still battering the city.
"Good grief, how freaking low can they go?"
Stealing from the dead.
Hang 'em High ~ Bump!
Damn Owl, you could write for the DU!!
ROTFLMAO, funny stuff!!!
Watching homie plug in his previously water soaked 32 inch TV would be a Pay per View fireworks display. ZAP! BANG! and the lingering scent of Madam Eurekas Pomade wafting in the air.
Ya know,
this is gonna sound weird,
but I'm having a hard time getting mad at looters cuz all my emotion is goin' towards those caught in NO and suffering.
~~sigh~~
I'll work on it.
Only fascist politicians, e.g. the Clintons and their Politburo coprophages, are worse than looters.
Rule .308 is optional.
Oh man, CNN is showing chopper video of hundreds if not thousands of homes flooded up to there rooftops.
Actually the attitude of people on this thread is pretty discusting. The looters do not reflect 99 percent of the population of New Orleans. This is similar to when some major sports team wins a national championship and their fans loot and burn. New Orleans has always been known for its hospitality and to be attacked at such a time is appalling. For those on this board that visited New Orleans there is alot more than the tawdry things you associated with and participated in. These are the people who work in one of the largest ports helping get your precious goods to markets and also exporting them to the world. These are the people who work in the shipyards , the oil industry, and one of America's largest seafood areas. Yeah true the Govt not that great. But I rather live in New Orleans where interaction between people whether poor, rich black, white , Dem, Repub happens on a real basis every day. Its a real city not some place where its easy to segregate yourself off. It will come back
