NEW ORLEANS (AP) With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.
"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

Unfortunately, it seems that every single city in this country would have looters who take advantage of a massive tragedy. This Denise Bollinger shouldn't be looking at it so naively.
Now we know why rev. al was speeding.
Diamond rings and 32 inch televisions aren't going to feed anybody...
These are the same people that will riot and burn down their own neighborhoods, then shoot at the fire trucks when they arrive to put out the fires.
Earlier it was being reported that Marshall Law was enacted in NO, but I haven't seen anything lately. Has it? And if not, why not??
Where are those heavily-armed Korean shopkeepers when you need them??
One smell of Lake Ponchetrain should have nixed that notion!
For being oppressed all of their lives, man...whatever that means.
You got that right.....
And these are the people first in line when good ole FEMA starts to dole out our money.
FEMA can't wait, with open checkbook.
Stupid is, as stupid does.
A looter with a brain would be snatching up bottled water and canned foods.
Sickening.
I hope the police and National Guard are using hollow points.
Dang! That statement sounds like the DU thread!
Can we Shoot to kill please to end this behavior?
That's really inspiring me to make disaster relief donations.
Our society teaches that the 'have-nots' are entitled to the property of the 'haves'. It all started with Robin Hood.
This is why I decided some time ago that I never wanted to go back to New Orleans. It's a dirty city full of vice and panhandlers. Last time we were there, it was about three months after Mardis Gras and they still hadn't taken down the bleachers or cleaned up the streets. filthy place. I'm glad the damage wasn't any worse but it's an armpit.
