Looting Begins in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

snip...

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

snip...

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

snip...

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

"If it takes helicopter gunships."

I understand your outrage but that could never occur under any conceivable Rules of Engagement employed by an American unit.

And there will be no "full auto" either.

Remember everybody -- there isn't a NG unit in the U.S. which does not have JAG officers advising them on ROEs.

I agree with you to an extent. The New Orleans of today is a far cry from the New Orleans of the mid 19th century when shanghai gangs worked the docks and gangs of murderers the likes of 'One Armed Charlie Monell' and his paramour 'Bricktop Jackson' terrorized the Quarter. While always having a veneer of southern graciousness and culture, New Orleans is one of those American cities that feels somehow foriegn. My first impression of it in 1968 was that here was a place that one could disappear in.

Oh, it's okay if you're oppressed.

Yeah I found a link to a N.O. tv station that was reporting on the different areas hit by the storm, and they were talking about the casualties in Slidell :( I worked at the WalMart Supercenter on Gause for about 9 months in mid 1999 to Spring of 2000. I hope all those I knew there are safe. We have friends from Pass Christian MS, so I hope they got out okay as well.

People loot after every disaster. This shouldn't be a surprise.

Aren't looters supposed to be shot?

Yeah ... but most of the Louisiana Nat'l Guard are overseas guarding against anarchy in Iraq. Bush is definitely to blame ...

a civilized man can behave uncivilized.
an uncivilized man and not behave civilized.

We can enjoy the "relaxed" morals of a wild NO street party as a change.

However that does not change the fact that for democrats, its is about as soPISSteeekated as it gets in the brain department.

Certain people do, and 95% of them don't vote Republican.

Figured the looting would start. All those stereos, so little time.

A while ago I was surfing and stopped on MSNBC. There's a former ballerina who has a show on that channel. That gay blade thinks because he MIGHT be the son (which I doubt) of one of our greatest presidents that somehow makes him an expert on all things. He chose to make a fairy slap at President Bush by asking a National Guard officer if he had enough troops to do the job because so many Guardsmen had been deployed to Iraq. The Guard officer set Limpwristed Ron straight (well, maybe not so straight) that he had enough troops to accomplish his mission.

The looney tunes lefties never give up, do they?

At a Walgreen's drug store in the French Quarter, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers. When police finally showed up, a young boy stood in the door screaming, "86! 86!" — the radio code for police — and the crowd scattered. Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement. "It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Same attitude of the London terrorists who were all on welfare: Biting the hand that has always fed them and acting out against those paying their way. PATHETIC!

WRONG!!! Robin hood was about confiscatory taxation!

He was stealing from those who were taxing the people into submission.

It is a surprise to some to note that the looters feel that they are getting back at their oppressors.
