Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I know exactly where you are talking about. I don't know about Stennis specifically. I will see what I can find out.

Due to a very large levee break, water continues to rise in NOLA. The situation in NOLA is grim for the immediate future. Rescue is attempting to evac the hospitals to locations including the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water.

As for the NOLA metro areas, beyond the info already posted, new reports are sparse.

I hope that's the case. That seems reasonable.

"We are supposed to ship a load of material to Abbeville Thur."

Another reason why anxious homeowners wanting to get back in should stay where they are and not clog up the highways. So all these emergency vehicles and personnel as well as supplies/materials can get through. On another note, they should have helicopters dropping at least water to these stranded people.

The mayor or governor should have had volunteers going house to house and ordering people to get in their cars or on buses or whatever, but they could have gotten all of them out.

Most people have no idea how large the number "million" is in the context of human beings. Evacuating a couple of million people from a major metropolitan area is no easy feat -- and is damn near impossible without starting weeks in advance.

I don't know the specifics of the LA grid.
Reliable water and sewer restoration cannot begin until the water is gone. Reliable power will require that MOST of the water be gone. Power is needed to run the pumps to get the water out. This is a vicious cycle. I would not be surprised to see barge mounted generators moved in to feed the pump stations, as well as pumpers in the forms of barges and ships to assist in the effort. I wish them luck... it's going to be a rough road.

Next question: Where do you send the water?
The water will be laden with oil, waste, and debris. You have the send it far enough away that you avoid significant flow back, sending it over the levee wont help if water is flowing back through levee breeches farther down.

The local environment will likely take a massive hit - vegetation and animal life will be impacted significantly both from the storm and from the clean up.

I mention this as a warning: I believe that very soon the environmental groups will begin to complain publicly, and some may even try to sue, over the emergency measures being taken.

Can you block off an entire state? I never heard of that except that skit on CAndid Camera.

The state needs provisions for food, etc.

Does anyone know if I55 north of the Lake is open to Jackson?

my guess is two fold....

1. the ammount of money and the logistical handling of a large number of boats (even flatbottom skiffs) can be expensive and enormous and a logistic nightmare to move around the country.

2. It is very rare that a storm of this magnitude that causes this ammount of flooding would hit that us and cause this ammount of flooding.

"If that is in fact the Twin Spans bridge, people worrying about it are wasting their time."

I'm worrying about it because the fate of that bridge speaks volumes about what happened in Slidell. In the absence of other info from Slidell, that is piece of info is meaningful.
